Read/Write speeds 105 MB/s

Featured Replies

Hi all,

My read and write speed caps out at 105 MB/s over Gigabit Ethernet when logged in as a guest on OS X. However, when I'm logged in as a user they drop to 90MB/s. Has anyone come across this before?

My server specs are:

Core i3 2100

4GB DDR3 ram

1TB Seagate Barracuda HDD

500GB Seagate Barracuda HDD

2TB Seagate Barracuda HDD Parity

Probably some other difference in your testing is causing it, not the login. Number and size of files, disks written to, etc.

Your server specs aren't relevant but your testing methods are. To make a valid comparison you have to be methodical, use the same test files, protocols, state of both server and client and repeat the tests several times. The difference between 105 MB/s and 90 MB/s is small and could be explained by a number of things.

Agree -- the difference between 105MB/s and 90MB/s is really very minor, and it's not unusual to see minor fluctuations like that.    This can be due to a variety of things -- the network;  the disks you're reading from (different parts of a file on different sections of the disk);  the disk you're writing to (buffering; inner/outer cylinder differences in where data's being written);  and a variety of other factors.    If you're very methodical ... i.e. ensure you're writing/reading the exact same file(s);  are writing it to the same locations (difficult to ensure, as even if you delete it between tests the OS may choose a different location on the disk);  etc. you MAY get more consistent results -- but I really don't think the difference you're seeing is anything to worry about.
