February 26, 20179 yr I recently finished my build using a Norco RPC 4224. I have 8 drives in the case currently. When running preclear I was getting getting temps of 43-45 and I was only 5% in. I stopped the preclear and looked into the issue. I have seen this video about closing the vents for hdd trays that are empty. The issue is that the trays i have are different and it looks like Norco changed these. From what I have read they have changed it so you can't close the vents anymore. I read that people have tried filling the unused trays with styrofoam packaging that came with the chassis and also have used electrically tape to block the holes. What would you suggest I do? I am using 3 hdd fans and 2 exhaust from noctula at full rpm. Their is plenty of airflow from what I can tell. Especially around the HDDs. It seems like the issue with the temps is the vents from what I have gathered. I have also contacted Norco support today about this issue but won't get a response until Monday at the earliest so I wanted to see if anyone had any quick suggestions so I can safely preclear these drives and begin using unRAID.
February 26, 20179 yr have you placed your Noctua's on right direction? i have many empty(and not closed) slots on my 4224, using 3 hdd vents too, and temp never hits 40 when checking parity.. how much is ambient temp at the server place? (mine is about 21-23, yes i know it's a bit high, but no choice at the moment..)
February 26, 20179 yr Suggestion1 Parity drive(s) on bottom row will be hottest. Try moving them to maybe bay6 + 11 (Reading your drive bays left to right -top to bottom) 2. Remove the 120mm fan wall, replace with 3x 140mm fans. Get some plexiglass and make s simple fan wall replacement even if its just a simple short strip top and bottom to secure the fans. 3. What speed are your hdd's 7200rpm cause massive heat increase in my experience for those chasis types.

I believe they are 7200rpm https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01BBKYNJG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 16 hours ago, uldise said: have you placed your Noctua's on right direction? i have many empty(and not closed) slots on my 4224, using 3 hdd vents too, and temp never hits 40 when checking parity.. how much is ambient temp at the server place? I also mounted 2 of the fans on the same side as the motherboard so I can access the sas and power cables easier if needed.
