March 20, 20179 yr Community Expert Or maybe you weren't really attempting that conversion, but since you mentioned that thread I thought that's what we were discussing. I read way too many posts. By the way, johnnie.black avatar is from the label of the beverage. And since you mention Raleigh (NC?), I am in Greensboro. Oh, and it's trurl, not turl. Lots of people make that mistake for some reason. If you're interested in the origin of my nym (which I have been using since before the internet invented the World Wide Web), lookup The Cyberiad by Stanislaw Lem.
March 20, 20179 yr Author Apparently, the system seemed to think it had to preclear the drive again and now it is formatting it again?? I just moved from the DC area and still go back frequently to visit friends. If you should decide to cross the pond again let me know and I will plan on being in DC. Can't miss me me, I am the guy who has all his hair pulled out.
March 20, 20179 yr Author Trurl, (did I get it right this time?) You are up the road a piece I would love to get together for a libation or two. I think that is about 40 minutes up I40 depending on traffic.
March 20, 20179 yr Author It formatted it XFS and now requires that I run another parity check for 17+ hours

March 20, 20179 yr Author I didn't think so but it is started and at this point I am just going to let it run. It can't hurt and this will leave me some time to do something else.
March 20, 20179 yr Community Expert It can't hurt but If you want post new diags so we can't see what happened.
March 20, 20179 yr Community Expert Are you sure you didn't press the check parity button? Don't see how it could have started otherwise. Disk6 is throwing some ATA errors, most likely a bad SATA cable, you should replace it when possible.
March 20, 20179 yr Author Once I have all the data squared away and running smoothly, I plan on replacing the mobo, cpu, and ram (fans & cables too). If there isn't a significant issue today with the cable then I would like to replace at that time (2 -3 weeks). I will dig around to see if I have one handy if I do I will replace it. I need to figure out what will take me another 5 or 6 years. I don't expect to become a big power user but with all the improvements I will be expanding my universe significantly. The check parity was check marked upon completion of the format so I thought that I needed to run check parity so I started it. When this is done I will reboot. My plan is to copy from my backup disk to the new 4 TB drive. The backup is NTFS and I plan on mounting in the server and copy it from there. This will be an experience. Next I plan on replacing Disk 3 (the oldest drive now) with another 4 TB drive. I will try to rebuild this one from parity. Once this is all stable I will move on to the internals and then pick up 4 TB replacement drives for the remainder. Until I finish the internal upgrades I do not plan on putting my server back in daily operation. This way I have current backups of every thing and I can recover from any situationthat may arise. I have purchased 4 Seagate Iron Wolfs 3 4TB and 1 1TB no errors of any kind on any of the drives.

OK, that makes sense, the check mark is always there, it's to correct sync errors if any are found, if you uncheck it you can still run a check (non-correct).

March 20, 20179 yr Author Trurl, We can settle on all the things that I don't know to do over drinks. Johnnie, you're invited too. Trurl will pick up your flight....
March 21, 20179 yr Author Trurl and Klapaucius Trurl is certainly easier to spell than Klapaucius. It appears these weren't published in English until 1974. My era was Robert Heinlein. His brother as one of my professors.

My era was Robert Heinlein. His brother as one of my professors. We may not be that far apart agewise (62). I read all Heinlein back in the 60s, 70s. Also Clarke, Asimov, Niven back then. Lots of others along the way and since. My current favorite is probably Neal Stephenson.
March 21, 20179 yr Author I'm 65 so we are close in age. Since graduation I have found myself reading technical docs and reading wasn't fun anymore. Now that I've retired I am beginning to read for fun. I will look into Neal Stephenson. Any particular book that you recommend?
March 21, 20179 yr Author Which do you think is a better method swap out disk 3 and let the system rebuild it first or copy my back up to disk 2 then swap disk 3 out? Here are the diagnostics after everything finished and before I reboot the system. tower-diagnostics-20170321-1111.zip
March 21, 20179 yr Community Expert Either way will work. Besides the already mentioned errors on disk6, latest diags also have similar errors for disk1, so when possible also replace that cable.

I spent a couple of decades after college reading mostly science for fun. Lately I have returned to my first love. Neal Stephenson, I think the phrase "genre busting" was made for him. Hard Scifi, his latest Hugo nominee, "Seveneves". Another Hugo nominee, "Anathem" Political intrigue, "Reamde" and "Cryptonomicon" (another Hugo nominee). Historical Epic, "The Baroque Cycle". He considers these a work of science fiction even though set in the time of Isaac Newton. I would have a very hard time choosing.
March 24, 20179 yr Author I replaced the cables this morning and I think everything is fine now. What is the best method of determining the sequence to replace older drives in my array. I have 4 drives that have between 2300 and 3000 hours on them? Apparently I've never run a smart self test on any of my drives. Is it worth having a base line test on each of my new drives? Should I run these test from the GUI or command line on the console? Disk 1 & 6 had some UDMA CRC errors but these were the drives that had the ATA errors or cable issue. These 2 drives are New 2 TB NAS drives. Trurl, went to the bookstore yesterday and found vol 3 of the The Baroque Cycle and The Diamond Age.
March 24, 20179 yr Community Expert They all look similar, and since none had issues during the recent parity sync and rebuild they all should be fine, I'd skip the SMART test and start replacing them in any order you want.

March 24, 20179 yr Author Johnnie I will start with the oldest drive this evening and try to do a rebuild. I plan on starting a new topic on other hardware upgrades in the hardware section I wold appreciate yours and Trurl's input.
