VM hevc 10-bit playback

Featured Replies

Hello,

I recently added a gtx 1050ti to my unraid server.

Basically the idea was that my VM could use the 1050ti for hardware accelerated hevc playback.

I have some sample files in 10-bit and i tested the playback using Plex .

Plex server says it's not transcoding(direct play) to my plex media player VM (or kodi using plexkodiconnect).

However CPU usage of the server is still very high on all assigned cores. Playback is still choppy.

Was i wrong in thinking that newer CPU's would help playback of these files?

I tried vlc over a samba share, doesn't even play ...

Is it supposed to work? Or is this due to the KVM VM limitations?

I also tried a windows 10 VM. Same result.

I hope someone can help. Thx.

Why are you doing this in a virtual environment to begin with? I would just do it on bare metal hardware for the best results.

Why can't this be done in a VM?

If he gets hardware acceleration to work it will not be any better performance bare metal.

I'm not saying it can't be done, it just complicates things doing in a virtual environment.

How many cores/threads are you dedicating to this VM? What kind of drive is the VM running on, SSD or regular hard drive?

Sorry, should have added specs.
I'm using a xeon 1230v2 with 6 cores assigned.
6gb ram assigned to the VM.
The VM disk image is on a ssd drive not included in the array.

Hmm, have not tested hardware acceleration. Did not know it was an option. I'll look into that.

I'm using a VM because i have my server in a separate room running an hdmi to my TV. It's been running a VM like this for a while now with good results.

Your CPU is only a quad core, that's four cores with four threads. Are you sure you have assigned six cores, or three cores and three threads? I wouldn't recommend assigning more then three cores with three threads, that would only leave one core and one thread for unRAID to run on.

Yes, i meant threads, not cores.

I have assigned 2cores and 2 threads now.

So as a follow up... I have now activated hardware acceleration in Plex media player on windows and it seems to run fine.

CPU usage is way down and movies play without stuttering.!

I'll have to test linux when Plex embedded gets updated to a newer libreelec version. Current version does not support latest NVIDIA drivers and my 1050ti does not work with it atm.
