April 9, 20179 yr I'm suffering with low performance with my VMs on my 1TB btrfs cache drive, I hadn't realised that it wasn't recommended to run live filesystems from btrfs as its not really mentioned anywhere. I can afford to add another drive just to VMs (both hardware and license costs above basic) so would it be best to clear my cache drive and format it as XFS?
April 9, 20179 yr No need to clear it, you should be able to stop the array and set the format type to XFS and when you start the array select the option to format the drive. I suspect you will not see a huge difference however, as spinner drives have always had lackluster vdisk performance. SSD is where it's at, for multiple reasons.
April 9, 20179 yr Author The cost for a 500gb SSD is prohibitive and wouldn't give me anywhere to store my downloads.
April 9, 20179 yr Community Expert Btrfs is not recommended for vdisks on HDDs due to the high fragmentation caused by copy-on-write, it's not an issue with SSDs. You can format your cache XFS or leave it btrfs, create a new share for the vdisk and in the share settings disable copy-on-write for that share.
