So... I am having A odd issue.

I have UBS tumb sticks.

4x Samsung 32gb BAR https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147452 (these were on sale for $1.75) (USB 3.0 )

Lexar JumpDrive S45 128GB  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B012PKV7RC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

Kingston 16gb (3.0)

Sandsik Cruzer Glide 8gb ... have no clue where this even came from.

and

Sony 8Gb microvault 2.0 ... I am sure this thing is over 10 years old ... if not more.   I know paid like $80.00 it when it was new .. 8gb is alot ..

Anyhow...

I have been trying get this up and running all day ... was getting A no bootable  error.  after hours of checking harddrives and bios options ... I started trying other USB sticks.  BTW all these sticks work.

out of all 8x

I can get it to start / run with the 10 year old 8gb sony and the 128gb Lexar ... the only 2 drives A did not want too use .... /GRRR

I really wanted too use one the samsungs cause I have so many and they are soild alluminm.

I have changed the ports / drives around .. the working drives will work in any port and non working drives wont work in any.

100% sure i have installed all the info on the drives the same way.

Is their any way I can install this too Msata Drive ... I have A ton of them.

Thanks , Neko

unRAID needs to be installed on a USB drive.  8GB is more than sufficient, but use a quality thumb drive - it's for the OS, after all.  I'm surprised the Sandisk and Kingston didn't work but if they're old/damaged it's hard to say.  I use a Sandisk Cruzer Fit, it's great for this purpose.

And your license key file will be tied to the flash drive you wind up using, so why would you want to go cheaper on something that is already inexpensive?

unRAID does make it easier to get a replacement key these days, but there is this in the replacement policy:

IMPORTANT:  An original key may be replaced at any time.  A replacement key may be replaced for another replacement after 12 months.  Should you require another replacement key within that 12 month period, send an e-mail to [email protected] to discuss your options.

So, not something you want to have to do over and over just to save a very few bucks.

And if you do have to replace the flash drive, in addition to the license key, you would have to try to restore your configuration, which is an opportunity to make mistakes that could be costly.

Did you check to see what format the one that were formatted with.  Lime has the following statement:  " Format the device using the FAT (or FAT32) file system. "   I know that other folks have had issues with devices that were formatted with non FAT formats.

None of my drives are cheap.  The Samsung's are really good drives ..they were just on sale.

They are all formatted the same / same way in fat 32.

This before entering in A key... this have installed unRAID on the USB Drive and powering on the HOST.

The host will boot unRAID with my best drive that is 128gb .. and my worst drive 8gb sony that is 10+ years old.  (dont want to use either of them)

I have checked all the drives with parted magic and removed all partitions and re- formatted / checked drives for errors.  They are all good.

I just cant get it to boot from 1 of the 6 I want to use.

[ I ordered A 32gb  Lexar JumpDrive S45  is like the 128gb I have that works ]

Are any of the drives you are having trouble with USB3 drives? Some people have had problems booting with USB3 drives or USB3 ports, others haven't had these problems. Maybe something to do with the mobo or BIOS.

Its I mix of both.

have A USB 2.0 Sony 10 years old .. it works.

have A USB 3.0  Lexar JumpDrive   less then A month old ... it works.

The 4x Samsung BAR  USB 3.0  all less then 3months old .. none work.

Kingston DataTraveler  USB 2.0 ... unknown .... dont work

sandisk cruzer glide 8gb ... no idea where this even came from ... dont work

(BY dont work, I mean will not boot unRAID, all drives work for everything else)

I have had this sever for about 3months now.   Been playing with ESXi , FreeNAS, Hyper V  and windows10.. been using these drives for it and had no issue.

I am 100% sure these drives are all working in general ...

EDIT Should note, the sever is 2011 .. USB 2.0 ... but usb 3.0 drives have been working fine will all the other OSes i have installed.

One more thing.  Check to see if there is more than one partition on the Flash Drives.  You can do this (in Win7) by 'Control Panel', 'Administrative Tools'  Then look for 'Disk Management' in the left-hand pane.  You UNRAID partition should be the only one-- Active and Primary Partition.

EDIT:      And use only a USB2 port until you are sure that your MB can handle booting from a USB3 port.  There are some cases where some interaction is going on with USB3 ports, the BIOS, The Linux booter and UNRAID that causes boot failures.  While USB2 is slower, it will only delay the boot time by a few seconds and since unRAID is run entirely from memory, it is almost never read or written to after that until shutdown when one file has a flag 'set' to indicate a successful array shutdown.

If you find that you have an unexpected partitioning scheme on the USB sticks, a tool like Rufus should be able to clean it up.

There used to be a special HP format program that was needed prior to using a USB disk. I remember having issues and that fixed them for me. Been a while since I formatted a USB,

their is one one partition per drive .. I used Parted magic to clear them all out and remove all parttaions before I even started,

All were then formatted the same way in windows under Disk Management , right click on drive (all blacked out ) , picked FAT32 and NExt / next .. till done .. ect ect.

all were 100% done the same.

No clue why some would not work.

I got A  Lexar JumpDrive S45   32gb and it works fine ... like my 128gb that works.  Using that
