Intel Optane as OS Drive

Featured Replies

unRAID installs onto a USB stick. As it boots, the OS is installed into a RAM disk. So there is no persistent "unRAID OS disk".

unRAID has a concept of a cache disk. The cache disk holds things like Virtual Machine images, Docker containers and configurations, and can also act as a high speed landing zone for files to be copied to the array. SSD / M2 disks make great cache disks. But I would say that 16G would be too small to be useful. 128G, 250G, 500G are more common sizes.

Get a 4G - 16G USB stick to install unRAID. This small M2 drive is probably not going to be too useful.

Ok. This means i can't unplug the USB stick after first start and so on. The USB stick must always plug in that unraid works.

For the Cache i want to use a 512GB SSD 850 Pro

Thanks

Can i create a vm that use a part of dedicated ssd for the OS? I want to get the advantages like fast boot etc.

The OS loads into RAM at boot (RAM is much faster than an SSD). The USB is the install media. Once the OS is installed, the USB is not used except for maintaining a few configuration files. The boot takes 1-3 minutes depending on the USB speed, number of disks, controller initializations, and motherboard.

Most people run their servers 24x7, with boots occurring monthly or even less frequently. So boot time is pretty meaningless.

Suggest you setup the USB disk and try it out.

Most new users are asking questions about performance of writes to the protected array. You might do some research there.

If your question is about the unRAID OS bjp999 has already answered it.  But, if you are referring to the VM OS, the unRAID cache drive is the default location for the OS image.
