April 17, 201016 yr I searched around and couldn't find a specific answer to this question. What I did find led me to believe that there may be some problem associated with what I want to do, but I'm not sure: I'm thinking of building an unRaid server to hold my media files, but I want to make sure that it will give me the functionality that I'm seeking. Currently I run pyTivo on a Vista desktop that also holds all my media files. These are streamed via cat5e to 2 Series 2 Tivos and one TiVo HD. It works great, but I'm interested in expanding my storage and securing my files against data loss by building a large unRaid server. My understanding is that the unRaid server will appear as a networked drive. Will I be able to point pyTivo to my media files on the unRaid server and stream them much like I do now? i.e. unRaid server --> Desktop running pyTivo --> Tivo. Has anyone done this? Are there any pitfalls to this setup? Everything is very transparent to me now. PyTivo is running as a service and starts up automatically each time my desktop starts. I pretty much keep my desktop on 24/7, so my files are always there for me to see without any interaction on my part. Should I expect the setup that I mentioned above to be just as transparent? Will pyTivo simply treat my unRaid server as though it is a HDD on my desktop? Many Thanks John
April 17, 201016 yr I dont see a problem with that.. I am doing something similar. Instead of pyTivo I am running several machines with XBMC and stream all my media from my unRaid server just fine..
May 9, 201016 yr I ran Pytivo reliably for a long time. From 2008 until a week ago on 4.2 until my install drive died =) I was using a full Slackware install though. The hardest part was getting ffmpeg compiled and working right, but I have a thread where I gave some info about how I did it. I am currently deciding whether I have the patience to do it all again =)
June 30, 201016 yr There's been some additional discussions on this over in this thread - http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=6571.0 And a summary of steps required posted in this message: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=6571.msg66634#msg66634 As indicated there, there is already a prepackaged FFmpeg available for a full Slackware unRAID install, care of one of the big Slackware contributors Alien.
