I see I have 2 options under network on my mac's 1 simply is the name of my NAS and the other is the NAS-AFP what's the difference I tried to search it here but didn't get a hit should I use 1 over the other?

I'm guessing one is samba file sharing and the other afp

While SMB has been supported longer, since OS X 10.9 Mavericks Macs will automatically default to using SMB2 when talking to each other, and fall back to AFP when file sharing with Macs running previous versions of OS X. Therefore "NAS" should be samba access and "NAS-AFP" obviously AFP access to the same server.

 

With Mavericks Time Machine only supported AFP backups, but that is no longer the case: https://support.apple.com/kb/PH25585

 

In the past writing was faster to AFPs, reading was faster from SMB. Which one to use therefore depends on your use case and OS X version. Generally speaking, Apple has said to move towards SMBX, so investing time into optimising SMB is probably the better long term investment, but there are some specific settings required to get good performance. Have a look at bfs_fruit (https://www.systutorials.com/docs/linux/man/8-vfs_fruit/) and google for "Slow SMB File Transfers on OS X". Since I have just started with unRAID I cannot yet provide any practical tips, but there are Mac specific settings in the SMB settings.

Thanks for the info will look into it, I have not experienced any difficulties so far just seemed a bit strange that my Mac's were showing this but not my PC's sounds simple enough.
