Next unRAID build - Tablet PC with USB 3.1+ ???

Featured Replies

With USB3.1 throughput/daisychain capability, I've been thinking about whether my next unRAID build could be something like the following:

Tablet PC, 256GB internal SSD, 3x8TB drives (2 data, 1 parity) connected via USB3.1 daisy-chain

Possibly a few other USB ports set up for USB DVB-T tuners, IR remotes

I know this is atrocious from a data integrity point of view due to unreliability of USB as a connection method, but I want to have something that is not bulky like my current full-tower case. If I could have a Tablet PC sitting next to the TV, with the 3 HDDs tucked away in the TV cabinet out of sight, but cool enough not to set fire!, I'd be happy.

I'd probably have a tough time finding good USB enclosures that have daisy-chain connectors and also enable the host PC to spin the drive down, but if everyone on the forum thinks this might be workable, I'll be happy to start looking...

Thanks in advance,

Zan

If you really want something small and low power that can run unRAID you could use something like the UDOO x86 with a 4-way SATA adapter in place of the m2 SSD.   That would give you a total of 5 SATA ports.  Not too good for VMs as it is limited to 8GB memory but should be fine as a basic NAS.   There may well be other comparable products but that is the only one I have experience of.
