October 11, 20178 yr In user shares, every single file will be stored in one hard drive without being splitted. But what if the overall storage is sufficient but no single hard drive has enough space to store a file? For example, a system with 3 4TB drives in the array, each one still has 2GB of space, so the array still has 6GB of space in total, but I want to store a 4GB file, what will happen?
October 11, 20178 yr A very basic principle of unRAID, one that makes it different from RAID, is that each disk is an independent filesystem. Each disk can be read without any of the other disks. Each file is stored completely on one disk. So, as Squid said.
October 12, 20178 yr Author Thanks for the quick answer. But how can I store that file without adding extra hard drive to the array? There maybe 2GB files in one of the existing hard drives, can I move them to another hard drive, so that 1 hard drive will be full, 1 will have 4GB of space, and 1 will have 2GB of space?

Is this a hypothetical question, or are you really that low on disk space? If you are really that low, then the recommendation would be to add a disk. Yes, you can move files from one disk to another.
October 12, 20178 yr It is generally recommended that you leave some free space on each disk. Some failure scenarios need some empty space to operate. The size of the largest file is normally recommended to stay free. Your idea of moving 2G file might work, but it depends on the split level and min free settings in the share. Those could be adjusted to make this method work. Obviously you are out of space. Whether you need space for this one file, or the next one, doesn't alter that fact. Either you need to delete unneeded files or buy a new drive. Might look at the Best Buy EasyStore 8T, which is well priced.
