Tried to add new cache drive

Featured Replies

So I tried to add a new cache drive to the array. I followed the guide but the new drive never gave the option to format. Now it is throwing this error (

cache (Samsung_SSD_840_EVO_250GB_S1DBNSAF634998V)has file system errors (Too many misplaced devices: 1)

If the disk if XFS / REISERFS, stop the array, restart the Array in Maintenance mode, and run the file system checks. If the disk is BTRFS, then just run the file system checksIf the disk is listed as being unmountable, and it has data on it, whatever you do do not hit the format button. Seek assistance HERE)

for both drives, even when one is removed. Need some help. Thanks!

I have this problem as well. I shut down my system and moved a SATA power cable, when I restarted I get a similar message.

The part about just running file system check if the disk is BTRFS and listed as unmountable appears incorrect however. The option is grayed out with a message that it is only available when the array is in Maintenance Mode.

Thanks so much for taking a look!

Please upload the diagnostics to the forum, google drive converts the syslog to a word document.

Before adding the new cache device was the cache filesystem already btrfs?

First time I see this exact error, but something went wrong when you added the second device, the balance failed:

You then tried to add it a second time and it this time it did start a balance but it aborted with ENOSPC:

If you have important data on your cache best bet is to try to recover and then reformat, if you need to recover see here:

P.S. I assume you are aware you have a disabled disk.

So im pretty sure none of my appdata was on the cache to being with and it currently says its all on disk 3. Do i just reformat both ssds then readd? And yes, ive had that disabled disk for a while and everything has been workin fine so i didnt want to mess with it lol

Add both SSDs to the pool and click format, if there's an error formatting, stop the array, and type this:

blkdiscard /dev/sdX

replace X with both SSDs, one at a time, then start the array and format.

What if another disk fails?

  • Author

maybe im confused. Are you talking about Disk 4? I had accidentally added the 120 sd to the array instead of cache and didnt know how to remove that line.

  • Author

okay ill do that now. thank you.

So i added the 2 drives, it only had me format the 120 and now its saying the pool of bothe the 120 and the 250 is only 60GB

  • Community Expert

It will only show one filesystem, it should show about 185GB total space though only 120GB will be usable in the default raid1 profile.

  • Author

oh so whats the point of me adding both? wouldnbt it just be better to add the 250 and take out the 120?

  • Author

So i did a new config, cleared the disabled disk and only added the 250 back. Now its saying it is btrfs but its only 448MB.

Thank you so much for all your help and incredibly rapid responses. I really appreciate it!
