Hello together,

 

i want to build a PC for my girlfriend and me. We both game and want to save money. 

So my thinking is, buy cpu, motherboard, case and powersupply once.

 

Purpose of this rig is Gaming, Programming(Compiling), Web-Surfing, Youtube and more.

 

GPU will be a GTX 1080 for her and me and the powersupply will have 750 Watt.

 

Intel Build:

- CPU: 8700K (399€)

- Motherboard: Z370 Gaming Pro Carbon (170€)

- RAM: 64GB RipJaws V Series Black (400€)

 

AMD Build:

- CPU: Ryzen 7 1800X (360€)

- Motherboard: X370 Gaming Pro Carbon (150€)

- RAM: 64GB RipJaws V Series Black (400€)

- Some cheap GPU for unraid (25€)

 

From pricing the intel build is 25€ expensiver.

 

Intel Advantages

- better Singlecorepeformance and because of that more fps in games

- better overclocking potential

- integrated gpu

 

Intel disantvantages

- slightly expensiver

- Only 6 Cores. That means 3 (6 Threads) for her and 3 (6 Threads) for me and i don't know if this is enough for gaming. What do you guys think?

 

AMD Advantages

- 8 cores

 

AMD disantvantages

- no integrated gpu

- can most only be overclocked to 4GHZ

- Bad Singlecoreperformance

 

So what do you guys think? Can you say me which way to go please.

Couple things, make sure to leave the first core or 2 for the unraid os. Gridrunner has a nice video on virtualization with both intel and AMD including video card bios passthrough. Either way, what’s the purpose of the 64GB of RAM? VM won’t likely need more than 8-12GB each. Also VM benefit of more than 4 vcpus per VM is less unless you are transcoding or something with the vm.

if for gaming, each vm/user will need their own gpu.  and 2-3 cores for each vm when gaming would be no big deal but maybe for the coding vm you might want more. I wouldn't mess with overclocking, it'll make very little impact, and offer less stability. because if it crashes, you'll have 3 systems go down. (unraid, your vm and your gf's vm.) so it needs to be reliable.

If you asked this a few weeks back I'd have said Intel, however recently amd and Kvm compatability has improved, especially with GPU pass through.

 

Therefore I would take the amd route, mainly as Unraid is so versatile your bound to do something more than 2 VMs and the extra core count is essential.

I usually use Intel, but I don't think the 8700k is all that well suited for a dual gamer setup.  Marginal number of cores, and not enough PCIe lanes.

was thinking the same and got myself a Asrock Taichi + 1700 (overcklock him myself) so u save much more of a money with the AMD Rig, u get more PCIe Lanes for your graphics and (for me additionally use 2x nvme SSDs)
