April 27, 200719 yr Hello all, I finally got my system set up. Currently running my first parity sync. It's going at 1,367 KB/sec, yet still is taking two days is that normal? I am unable to find the tower via my network places, or typing the ip address into my FTP client to move files over, how do I got about doing that or do I have to wait for the pairty scan to stop. Thanks.

I am unable to find the tower via my network places, or typing the ip address into my FTP client to move files over, how do I got about doing that or do I have to wait for the pairty scan to stop. Thanks. Two days is longer than normal... Press the refresh button on your browser. The initial speed calcs are way larger than usual because the disks are initially spinning up. If still showing 1,300Kb/sec one of your drives is probably in PIO mode. Normal time for me is approx 500 minutes with a 7 drive array IDE based array. my speed IDE based array is closer to 18,000Kb/sec, those with SATA based arrays report speeds two or three times faster. Most of the time the slower speed is caused by one of the following; 1. inncorrect bios setting on the motherboard. 2. wrong cables used for IDE drives (round cables cause errors and as a result the drives resort to PIO mode) 3. bad driver (driver for the chipset on the motherboard is not able to use DMA mode) sometimes Tom can find a better driver. 4. defective drive You might mail Tom a copy of your syslog and see if he has an idea of which it might be... ( /var/log/syslog ) There is no FTP server in unRaid at this time. FTP client on your PC will not work because there is no FTP server listening for it. You will be using unRaid's built in SAMBA to present shares to your PC and your PC's explorer to copy files.
April 28, 200719 yr Author I cant get into syslog, if I type /var/log/syslog i get -bash /var/log/syslong: Permission denied WHats PIO mode and how might I change the bios. One of my IDE cables is very long so that could be it.
April 28, 200719 yr Author I think my problem is Im using an old 40 wire cable, Ill have to get some 80s tomorrow. Id still like to know why I cant get my log though.
April 28, 200719 yr the command you want to use to look at the syslog is cat /var/log/syslog |more You can go to that file by typing cd /var/log If you the enter the command ls you should see the file. Remember, you are using linux and you will need to use linux command structures.

April 30, 200719 yr Author Got it working. IP is set right, I can play stuff off my Xbox Media Center. I just need to fix my slow parity problem, which will hopefully resolve when my tigerdirect order comes in with the 80 conductor cables woot. Thanks Tom and everyone here.

When people solve or answer their own questions posted it would really be nice if they would also post how they did it, that those of us with the same question (like me ) can get help w/o posting.

I 2nd that!!!! I just thought I had found the perfect post that would help me do the same things (ie find the Unraid Server on the network) What a disappointment this thread turned out.
