Joe L.
I used unmenu pkg mgr to install the APC package, but I need to figure out how much load my Tower is using on the UPS. I'd like to plug a couple other things in the UPS. Many of the UPS have status reports will give you the load. When I run the /sbin/apcaccess status command, either at a linux prompt when logged in, or by pressing the "UPS Status" button on the System-Info tab in unMENU, I can see the load-percentage. I can also see the nominal wattage of my UPS. Below is my output. My UPS on the unRAID server is a 450 Watt nominal unit. It is reporting it is at 55% of capacity with all 15 of my disks spinning. To figure out the actual current drawn is just a bit of basic math. (450 * .55 = 247.5 watts ) Just be aware that the disks can draw a lot more when spinning up to speed at the same time, and they will all need to spin up in order to be unmounted to shut down the server cleanly, so you would want to take a conservative approach on loading the UPS. Joe L.
Thanks Joe. I should have looked in the unmenu options first. It has a lot of stuff built into it, that's for sure. Lots of people have made suggestions and contributions of their code and configuration files for additional packages, and it really evolved into a pretty useful addition. What UPS do you have? What does it show as its "status" report? Joe L. Link to comment

Joe L.
It is the same unit I have, only a year newer, and more lightly loaded. Mine has worked wonderfully for the past few years... Looks like you found the UPS Status button. Which of the two APCUPSD packages did you install? The older release?, or the newer? I tried the newer, and ended up at one point after a few weeks where I could not get a status report from the UPS. I'm back to using the older version now, and will try again at some point with the newer once I move some disks off of the server. I did not want to take chances with the UPS losing communications with the server. Joe L. Link to comment
dogmanky
Which of the two APCUPSD packages did you install? The older release?, or the newer? Joe L. I just installed the older one. Considering the purpose, I decided to just go with something tried and tested. I'll run another status the next time all 19 drives spin up. Link to comment

dogmanky
Joe, I'm at 38% load with all 19 disks spinning.. i have 16 of them in the same spin up group, 2 in another and the parity. Do you think I have any room to plug up anything else to the UPS? Link to comment

garycase
The APC UPS package can only show what's being communicated from the UPS. I'm surprised the SmartUPS doesn't show the "Nompower" field -- but I don't think you can do anything about it. Perhaps the 220v units have slightly different status info. garycase
the "nompower" field is missing ? Note: There is a firmware update for your UPS model, dated 12/03/2012, on the APC site. I tend to be an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" kind of guy -- but if you want to register with APC and download the update, it may very well add the additional information fields to the status info Link to comment

You might give APC a call a find out. There is no way to give a parameter the UPS cannot supply. As I said, a wattmeter is FAR easier to attach and figure out the load. (besides, you already have a good idea based on the LOADPCT. Link to comment

I absolutely agree with Joe L ==> your UPS is working fine; any firmware update will, at most, simply add another bit of status info that you don't really need ... and as with any firmware based device, a bad flash could effectively destroy the unit !! chrissi5120
you're right guys My UPS is markes as 750VA 480W, so can i do that simple math ? LOADPCT x 480W = Load in Watt 0.27 x 480W = 129,6 W ? best regards Christoph Link to comment
garycase
LOADPCT x 480W = Load in Watt 0.27 x 480W = 129,6 W ? Yes, that's correct. An even better way to know what your system is using -- which will include any UPS "overhead" (the UPS itself draws a small amount of power) -- is to use a Kill-a-Watt, a VERY handy little gadget that everyone should have http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882715001 Link to comment
