Seagate 3TB drives are here. $250.

Featured Replies

The 3TB Barracuda XT is a 7200RPM drive. The drive has a 32MB DRAM cache, which is half of what Seagate ships on its 2TB drive making it clear that the 3TB drive used in the GoFlex Desk isn’t 100% performance optimized. Seagate reaches its 3TB capacity by using five 600GB platters.

Internally the drive uses 4K sectors however it translates to 512-byte sectors before it reaches the SATA port. This means to a SATA interface the 3TB drive looks like a drive with 512-byte sectors. The GoFlex Desk docks then map the 512-byte sectors back to the 4K format. There’s obviously overhead associated with these translations but it’s not huge in most cases. The final 4K translation done by the GoFlex Desk dock means that you can partition the drive using MBR which ensures Windows XP compatibility.

For those of you looking to buy a 3TB GoFlex Desk, crack the case open and use the drive inside your system there are some challenges that you should be aware of.

when internal versions of the 3TB drives ship, don’t expect them to perform much differently from the 2TB drives we have today.

I'd say, not quite ready for prime time IMHO.

Seagate are doing a NAS with 3TB drives, so I guess they've figured out a motherboard and Linux build that supports it. I'm assuming they've used Linux.

Seagate has added its 3TB drive to the 2- and 4-slot BlackArmor NAS boxes, taking capacity up to 12TB.

Both systems will come pre-populated with 3TB drives in each bay.

The BlackArmor NAS 440 is configured with RAID 5 and ships with 10 backup software licenses out-of-the-box, while the NAS 220 ships with RAID 1 configuration for automatic data mirroring and five backup software licenses.

Additional licenses for both products can be purchased in 2 and 5 -set increments on Seagate.com.

For the first 30 days, CDW will provide the 12TB BlackArmor NAS 440 for a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $1,899.99, and NewEgg will sell the 6TB NAS 220 for an MSRP of $649.99. ®"

What amuses me is that they seem to think those are good prices...
