July 4, 201016 yr Hi, Are there any people running a server besides a unRAID box? I want to separate things like downloading stuff, running web-apps (Squeezebox server), website, FTP etc. What server OS do you use? EDIT: i hope this is the right topic.
July 4, 201016 yr I run a few servers and services, which slowly over time I merge into unRAID. squid proxy, ftp-proxy, ss5 proxy, http, ftp, dhcp, tftp for PXE boot, name server, Samba, nagios. syslog-ng to mysql. I've moved a fair amount of these servers over to unRAID over time. As I retire machines, I put the hard drives in the unRAID server. For other machines I have them running on an SSD with NFS access to the unRAID server. I have an old RH 7.3 server (which was my fw and proxy gateway and for music with an internet radio station) As far as downloading stuff and running media serving web apps. That I do on the unRAID server. For other services that face the internet, I use an administration server. I use Centos 5 Server for administration. (but this is also because it is very close to RHEL5 and that is what we use at my job).
July 4, 201016 yr I have a Hackintosh server along with my Unraid server to do all the stuff you mentioned. It also does iPhone specific stuff like streaming EyeTV (aka local TV) and Air Video (aka my entire movie collection) to my phone. The Hackintosh also uses Plex to double as a HTPC frontend.

I was disappointed in Microsoft. I experiment with Amahi and ClearOS (Clarkconnect). ClearOS is Centos based. Then i start looking for a good NAS software. I wanted a easy expandable storage device, but also power efficient. I found unRAID, and i'm happy with it. I'm still considering ClearOS for my server. As always i also looking for a better server OS. Suggestions are welcome... I have a Hackintosh server along with my Unraid server to do all the stuff you mentioned. I had a hackintosh (client). Now i'm running Windows 7 onto my desktop. A year ago i start looking for alternatives also for the client. I tried different Distros (Ubuntu, Mint), but i can also run Mac OS X on my desktop. I like Mac OS X, but buying a iMac cost you a lot of money. Still i like Mac OS X. Have you running Mac OS X server onto your hackintosh?
July 5, 201015 yr Have you running Mac OS X server onto your hackintosh? No, regular OSX is plenty powerful.
July 7, 201015 yr I've got email, web, database servers for office functions running on virtual machine Win2k clients. I've had virtual machines running Winxp and ubuntu at different times for bug databases or whatever. I use them for additional development platforms also. I've run Win2k3 servers Win2008 server for development purposes, mostly as virtual machines. I'm experimenting with a DVD ripping server using DVDFab Decrypter on Ubuntu 10.4 + wine in a virtual machine. In the past my servers had to be on hardware and having them on virtual machines is so simple. I lean in the direction of running critical applications in their own OS so that troubleshooting/rebuilding is simpler. I don't really like the Ubuntu desktop gui (gnome) but with a preference of running critical apps in their own OS it would get too expensive to buy lots of Winxp licenses and Win2k is no longer officially supported limiting it to applications that can be safeguarded by restricting the access to the machine. Anyone know if wine can be installed on Ubuntu server or unRAID?
July 7, 201015 yr I moved everything that needs to be on all the time to unraid to save money on electricity I have a Freenas box for backups but its turned off most of the time these days.
July 8, 201015 yr I'm actually piggy-backing a bunch of virtual machines (mostly running Apache+PHP) on my parents' HTPC (DH57JG+i3-530+4GB, 30W idle). It's always on, anyway, and it's much easier to run VirtualPC on the HTPC than try to figure out installing VirtualBox on the unRAID server. Besides, the unRAID server is running on a Celeron 430 and 2GB RAM. While the Celeron is no doubt fast enough for the low load, the 2GB memory is looking decidedly miniscule. However, I do have a sand-boxed Atom build for torrenting.
