What is the recommended way of replacing data drive?

Featured Replies

I follow this guide, https://lime-technology.com/wiki/Replacing_a_Data_Drive

Nowhere in that article mention anything about preclearing. So what happens? Is it auto preclearing? Preclearing not neccessary anymore with recent unraid updates?

Im already rebuilding the data drive.

What should I do? Stop rebuilding and emulate content to preclear or just continue rebuilding?

THanks.

You don't need to clear a drive when replacing another, only when adding a new disk to a parity protected array.

THanks for the clarification.

As mentioned, the only time a drive needs to be clear is when it is ADDED to a NEW slot. A clear drive has no impact on parity, so when you add a clear drive parity remains valid.

Preclear does two things though. It zeroes the disk as just discussed so it can be added to ask array without impacting parity, but it also tests the disk pretty thoroughly and helps prevent adding drives that would otherwise fail early in their lifetimes.

So although preclearing is not required when replacing a disk, it still provides a benefit to do so.
