February 6, 20188 yr Hi all, perhaps I am not finding it in the right spot, so I just wanted to ask a basic question. One does not have to use same-size HDs for unRAID configs, right? I have three 3TB drives now, and was looking to add a 6TB one, just want to make sure that I can do this.
February 6, 20188 yr No problems with that. The only thing is that the parity drive(s) must be as large or larger than your largest data drive
February 6, 20188 yr Community Expert Parity disk must be at least as large as the largest data disk. Other than that, you can mix drive sizes as much as you want.
February 6, 20188 yr Also in the future you can pull any of the drives out and swap in “larger” drives as long as your Parity is the largest or Equal to your largest Data drive. Also you can mix and match Sata and IDE drives too.
February 6, 20188 yr Author Ah, that was the big part that I was missing, I was not connecting on the parity disk part. Thanks all!

You can't add the 6TB as a data disk if you have a 3TB parity disk. This is obvious if you understand how parity works. Many things about how unRAID operates make a lot more sense if you understand parity. It isn't very complicated.
