Ubuntu 16.04 VM on Unraid 6.5 - How do I mount the Unraid Share with Mount Tag?

Your VM would see your unRAID shares as shares on a network file server, just as any PC on the network would. So from the desktop you can browse the network for them or use something like smb://tower/Storage to access the one in your example. If you prefer you can set up NFS and share them that way.

I am familiar with that, but was thinking these specified shares in the VM config would provide a better experience (e.g. like a mounted drive). I have limited space on the cache drive for the VM, and run into issues when trying to write large files (>10GB) directly to a network share via smb.

So this option in the config doesn't really do anything?

NFS would be the better option in that case.
