June 10, 200719 yr Firewire Lan is a good feature for those of us without Gigabit. And Ext3 is easier for disaster recovery under another system.
June 26, 200719 yr I absolutely do not get the point of adding firewire as a lan alternative. A gig networkcard is a few bucks, so why is firewire usefull ? /Rene
June 26, 200719 yr I can see if they MB, for some reason, has Firewire and NOT gigabit lan built in, then you don't loose a PCI slot (1 of 2 if your board is a micro-ATX like mine)
June 26, 200719 yr Author Well, my mobo doesn't have gigabit, as a lot of older mobo, and since firewire is there, I might as well use it instead of buying a new NIC if it was possible. I don't see the point of buying things, even if cheap, if I don't have to. If Firewire is too complicated or time consuming to get working, I will buy a NIC then. Also I use unRAID linked exclusively to my Mac Mini, and it uses the Ethernet port, it's not a problem at the moment as I use Wifi, but if I have to use the Ethernet port, I will then have to use a switch.
June 26, 200719 yr åhh, ok. Sorry, my focus were solely networked storage, I didnt see the usage as a personal external-harddisk-box. /Rene
June 26, 200719 yr åhh, ok. Sorry, my focus were solely networked storage, I didnt see the usage as a personal external-harddisk-box. /Rene Unraid's stated purpose is networked storage, so I don't think many of us would think of using it as direct connect storage. However, that does raise an interesting question: would write performance be better via Firewire? If so, having a direct-connect for publishing data but NAS for reading would be an interesting combination. Bill
June 26, 200719 yr Author Well it's direct connect because i really only have one machine to connect it to.
