August 27, 201015 yr I built my second Norco 4220 server and have it sitting next to my first one. When I transfer files to the new server my speeds are about 12 MB/s vs 25 -30 MB/s to my older server. Sometimes my speeds to the newer server are much slower than the 12 MB/s. I am transfering from the same computers using the same cables and the same router and the same switches so it can't be my network. I have changed ports on the switch that both units use and changed cables to the newer server. Nothing has changed. I also changed the bios setting on the SATA configuration from IDE to AHCI but no change in speeds. Here is the hardware list on the newer server and I have attached my syslog. I am guessing it is something simple I am overlooking but I am lost. Any ideas? August 27, 201015 yr It almost sounds like the new server is using 100 mbit connection instead of the gigabit connection. What does "ethtool eth0" display?
August 27, 201015 yr Well it looks like you are using many Seagate LP and WD20EARS drives. Are the EARS drives jumpered (pin 7 and 8 ) - if they are not - read first here about the possible problems. And about Seagate LPs - http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=7402.0 It appears that these also suffer from "firmware" problems and you are using one as a parity. Are any of these connected to the SATA3 ports - if they are any move them to the regular SATA2 ports and try again first before doing any other changes.
August 28, 201015 yr Author Changed my parity drive to a Hitachi and now my transfer speeds top out at 32 MB/s. All is back to normal. I would say the Seagate are slow to start but the speeds are OK once they get going. I checked on Seagate to see if there was a firmware update for my drives and there wasn't. Thanks for the help.
August 28, 201015 yr No, that is not correct. There is a firmware update for your drives. You need to force the firmware update because of Seagate's failure to properly update their firmware updater. [ http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=7402.msg72527#msg72527 ] If you run the following command to examine the current firmware revision it will likely indicate CC34 which is NOT the most recent. The most recent firmware revision is CC35. hdparm -i /dev/sdb hdparm -i /dev/sdc hdparm -i /dev/sdd hdparm -i /dev/sdg hdparm -i /dev/sdh Model=ST32000542AS, FwRev=CC35, SerialNo=6XW1PDHJ Config={ HardSect NotMFM HdSw>15uSec Fixed DTR>10Mbs RotSpdTol>.5% }
August 30, 201015 yr Author Pulled the seagate as the parity and replaced it with a Hitachi, parity check speeds went up by about 50% to 75k KB/s from about 47K. Pulled 2 of the 4 seagates left and replaced them with Hitachis and my parity speed went up again to about 83K KB/s. Since I have 9 of the seagates should I use them for other storage or it is safe to use them in the unRaid server after the firmware update? I have updated 5 of the 9 without issue.
