PS3 Media Server DVD.ISO

Anyone know what dependency PS3 media server needs in order to play DVD ISO files?  Works fine under Windows and Linux and we are using a Linux install so I am assuming it is one of the dependency files.

This is the one thing that keeps me thinking of going full blown Linux distro for a server.

But windows and linux have CD/DVD support.  Don't believe Unraid has that CDrom or DVD supported CDFS.

WeeboTech, March 2008.

Is there a way to get a CDROM/CD Writer detected and showing up in the system?

Upon boot I see the hardware itself is detected, however there is no device node for it.

I put one in my server so I could share out CD's when needed or burn images stored on the server with CDRECORD.

Seems there are udev rules, yet no device nodes...

As the ISO is of a CDFS, I believe it needs to be enabled in the kernel or a module so PS3 Media Server can read the ISO??  Let me know if I'm blowing smoke here ???

I know some zip programs can open ISO's, so all it'd need is a way for PS3MS to be able to open it for reading.....Guessing alot here.

I can watch movies on my HTPC which is Linux based watching dvd.iso files.

Playstation3 as well uses the Linux OS unless I'm mistaken. I'd like to watch/stream ISO files on a PS3 too. Trying to build a system for a buddy, but I don't currently know as of yet what it will and will not do.

You are mistaken. The PS3 runs a proprietary OS made by Sony. No one knows the internal workings of it besides Sony.

Also, you can not play/stream ISO files to the PS3, it simply does not support that. The only way to play the whole DVD (menus and all) is by inserting the DVD into the PS3. I personally just ripped all my DVDs into m4v format which plays fine on the PS3. I hate all the useless DVD menus and previews anyway. I just want to watch the movie.

kizer,

I abandoned XBMC not too long ago as I wanted a solution that was more set it and forget it.  I use the PS3 as a frontend now and use PS3 mediaserver.  I miss full DVD ISO support with menus but am hoping folks will be able to mod the boxee box to run XBMC seeing as the 2 projects are related.

If you do a little reading/searching over at the XBMC forum you can get a box that is set it and forget it.

I could never get the box to properly suspend and wake with the remote.     Other than that it worked fairly well.

OK, that makes sense then.  Suspend and Wake are SO dependent on the Kernel, hardware, etc that it can be a crap shot.  I recently updated my JetWay Mini-Top and I can now turn it on and off with the power button on my remote.

My little box doesn't turn on from the remote, but honestly I'm up and moving around so its nothing for me to turn on the HTPC while grabbing my remotes and turning on my Sub.

Of course now my problem is building something for a buddy that will support a good storage solution. He has the PS3 and I'd like to use unRAID for storage, but figuring out how to get the data to his ps3 is stumping me. I was hoping ps3 would support SMB, but it appears it requires a media server of sorts to work.

I see a few posts in the pm3mediaserver talking about how some got it to work and some have problems. Does it transcode or does it just supply a link to the files?

PS3 Mediaserver will transcode files that the PS3 doesn't play natively.

The only thing that doesn't work that does on a full LINUX and Windows install is reading DVD.ISO files.

All I did to rectify this was unzip the ISO into it's VIDEOS_TS folder and use DVD Shrink to extract the 5.1 audio stream and main movie and checked off to not split files into 1GB chunks.  The result is the main movie as one large .VOB file.
