unRAID crashes everyday. Syslog attached.

Featured Replies

Noob here. Several times a day when trying to load a movie I OWN via cloneDVD, it rarely completes. I am forced to manually shut down my unRAID server via the power switch.

I have no idea what I am doing with linux or unRAID, lol. I've read and read but cant really find out what to do. I do see in my syslog USB 3 is an issue but no idea if its the root of my crash issuess.

Attached are two syslog files. #1 is when I first turned it on, then it crashed while trying to load a movie. Cant get another syslog until I physically flip off swtich and reboot. #2 is the second syslog. Does this help? Im SO lost!

I have been having issues for week (which is about how long I have been playing with this. It said i had a bad disk, turn out one of them had a loose connection. I fixed that then it had me to a parity check. That took 24 hours! Wow. Im sure there was an easier way. Anyhoot, was confident that would have fixed my crashing issues but it didnt. I went ahead and attached #3 which was my syslog prior to fixing my disconnected hard drive.

Thanks!!

What does a 12 hour run of memtest say?

  • Author

I didnt run a 12 hour memtest lately. However I have run one in the past and it was fine. I assume thats the option test I have when unRAID first boots up? I can run that again if it helps.

Yes. Run it again when you can.

Your symptoms are virtually identical to problems I was having when using the onboard nic.  In your log I noticed:

Note they are all using the same IRQ - not saying this is definitely the cause of your problem, but it was for me.  In my case I disabled the onboard nic and added a pcix one.  Ever since then I haven't had a single lockup.  Go into your bios and see if it will let you select a different IRQ for the nic - however if the same controller chip is being used for USB, it may change those as well in which case if you have a slot based nic around I'd try that.

Also, I noticed this:

Sep  8 20:29:48 Jethro kernel: e100: Intel® PRO/100 Network Driver, 3.5.24-k2-NAPI

Sep  8 20:29:48 Jethro kernel: e100: Copyright© 1999-2006 Intel Corporation

Do you have more than one nic in that machine?  Even though its only 10/100, it might be a worthwhile test to disable the realtek one and use that Intel one if it exists.

  • Author

Yes. Run it again when you can.

Running it now, for the last 15 minutes. Does it really take 12 hours? ugh,lol

  • Author

Jazzy, I will do that once my mem test is done. thanks!!! hopefully its THAT simple, lol.

  • Author

Interesting, looking at the back of my unRAID box, there is only one NIC spot.

I will source an pci one this week. Wonder if any work better than another, lol.

  • Author

Running my memtest. Its says "PASS COMPLETE, no erros, press esc to exit"

but it still appears to be running test. I should keep letting it go, right, and not exit?

Doesnt make sense.

Did you see if you can change the irq in the bios?  I'd hate to have you buy them and come to find out that isn't the problem.  If you don't have any spare cards and don't have someone you can borrow from, you could try a local store with a decent return policy - after checking the unraid compatibility list.

Also you don't have to replace the one in your Win7 box.

  • Author

no jazzy, havent tried the Irq yet. waiting for the memtest to complete first.

I was thinking if i changed my 100 nics to 1000 between the machines (have an gig switch) it would speed up my transfers. THats correct right?

Providing both machines have a GBit card

exactly chanders. So, Im actually gaining performance by changing out my nics regardless if it fixes my other issues here.

Thanks!

It appears that you have two Supermicro controller cards.

What is your motherboard and have you updated the BIOS to the latest revision.

Once you update the BIOS load the optimal values and then disable the unused stuff (floppy, COM port, parallel port, audio, even the IDE port if you are not planning to use any PATA drives) to free some resources.

If you have only 100Mbit onboard LAN by all means buy an add-on GB card but if you have a choice buy an Intel based one.

The one you picked probably will work OK as it is Reatek based but does nor support wake-on-lan (WOL) - not sure if this feature is important to you.

LOL, OK, this is a linux box so i have NO idea who to get to the bios! Let me do a google search.....

well i found "# biosdecode" but that doesnt tell me anything.

How do I do this? Let me try searching wiki unRAID.

  • Author

Great idea bc, i will get an intel. I DO want WOL!

Yes, there are two Supermicro controller cards. I have two 4 drive hotswap cages. Only one is being used right now as I only have four 2T drives. Want to add more later. Should I take the other one out for now?

After I figure out how to get into the bios, I will make those changes.

THANK YOU!!!

What you're looking for is your motherboard bios, not Unraid.  When the machine first starts up, you should see a message like "Press F2 to enter setup" - or it could be the DEL key, or F10 - depends on the manufacturer.  In there is where you want to look to see if you can change the network card IRQ (and disable any unused items as bcbgboy mentioned).  Make sure you note what changes you make as you can cause the the machine to no longer boot if you change the wrong thing (boot order for example)

  • Author

Thats what I expected jazzy, just like when booting from a windows machine: hit "x" to get into bios.

I dont see and never have seen that on this unRAID box. When I reboot it it goes directly to the unRAID screen of memtest or unRAID.

At a complete loss.

  • Author

got it! Since I am going thru a kvm switch, it doesnt show up the first couple seconds of the screen. The manual says hit DELETE. Im in bios now.

I have a GA-MA785GT-UD3H mother board. On my smart lan in bios is says 1gb found. however, my HTPC is only 10/100 so I need to replace that.

in my bios, here is what I have done (* denotes that I changed it)

onchip IDE channel - disabled * (dont need it right?)

onchip SATA controller - enabled

onchip SATA Type - NATIVE IDE

onchip SATA Port 4/5 Type - IDE (it wont let me change this)

onboard LAN Function - enabled

onboard LAN Boot ROM - enabled

SMART LAN - press enter (pressing it shows me i have 1gb)

onboard audio function - enabled

onboard 1394 enabled - disabled * (dont need it right?)

onchip USB controller - enabled (i need this since my unRAID flash is plugged in back?)

USB EHCI Controller - enabled ??

USB keyboard support - disable* ?? not using this, disable right?

USB mouse support - disable

Legacy USB storage detect - enabled?

On board serial port 1 - 3F8/IRQ4  ?

On board parallel port -378/IRQ7  disable?

Parallet Port Mode - spp

ECP Mode Use DMA - 3  (wont let me change)

Not good with bios so sure could use some advice on what to change or change back.

jazzy, I didnt see anything that would allow me to change IRQ on nic. I see where I can change it on PCI. Out of luck there?

attached is my latest syslog.

SHould I be concerned about USB 3 being messed up?

Also, everytime I log in since I did a parity check last night, it starts a new one. I stop it as all drives are green. I dont want it to do a parity check everytime.

Regardless, my biggest concern right now is the crashing when I copy a movie over to unRAID.

Yall are a HUGE help! THANK YOU!

Well you have a Gigabyte GA-MA785GT-UD3H board - and as every Gigabyte board you may have problems with HPA (aka dual BIOS) - you may or you may not!

Second - this board has three different hardware revisions and you must be able to identify it by the marking and download the correct BIOS for your motherboard (rev.1.0, rev.1.1 or rev.1.3)

The latest BIOS for all three of them is F8 (but they are different) and they all fix "On/Off Charge & USB compatibility"  so it may somehow improve the USBs IRQ sharing.

However flashing a BIOS is risky and you have to know what are you doing as there is a chance you can damage your board.

  • Author

well I think I have proven I dont know what I am doing, lol.

So, what now? I think I get the version off a lable thats on the actual board. Im sure I can find step my step instructions to flash my bios.

Well if you are going to flash your BIOS and immediately after it is done reboot the computer, go into the BIOS again and "Load the Optimal Settings", save them , reboot, go into the BIOS again and adjust the settings as I commented in bold

in my bios, here is what I have done (* denotes that I changed it)

onchip IDE channel - disabled * (dont need it right?) -  OK disabled

onchip SATA controller - enabled -  OK

onchip SATA Type - NATIVE IDE  - change to AHCI mode

onchip SATA Port 4/5 Type - IDE (it wont let me change this) - change to AHCI or same as SATA 1 to 4 - will let you do it when you change the previous setting

onboard LAN Function - enabled - OK

onboard LAN Boot ROM - enabled - disabled

SMART LAN - press enter (pressing it shows me i have 1gb) - not need to do anything here

onboard audio function - enabled - disabled

onboard 1394 enabled - disabled * (dont need it right?) OK disabled

onchip USB controller - enabled (i need this since my unRAID flash is plugged in back?) - YES enabled

USB EHCI Controller - enabled ?? - YES enabled

USB keyboard support - disable* ?? not using this, disable right? - you may leave this on enabled, no harm

USB mouse support - disable  - OK disabled

Legacy USB storage detect - enabled?  - OK enabled

On board serial port 1 - 3F8/IRQ4  ? - scroll up/down to disable

On board parallel port -378/IRQ7  disable?  - OK disabled

Parallet Port Mode - spp - YES but doesn't matter as you disabled the parallel port

ECP Mode Use DMA - 3  (wont let me change) - YES but doesn't matter as you disabled the parallel port
