disks change id on startup

Featured Replies

Every time I restart the server some the drives ID numbers change and unraid report the disks as missing...

I can restart the array by using the "new config" tool and telling unraid that the parity disk is already good but, I really hate having to do this. It's to iffy for me to trust important information like this. Also, it is not the same disks, its random as to which ones.

Boot USB Unraid 6.6.3 in internal USB port

Cache Disk 120gb PNY using Sata port A

Array Disks #1-3 Perc i6 raid passthrough slots 1-3

Parity Disk #1 Perc i6 raid passthrough slot 4 (EDIT: I meant to put H200a, which is manufactured by LSI)

Have you tried flashing your Perc 6 SATA Controller to "IT" mode? Make sure it's not running in RAID mode.

Have you tried a different and better supported SATA controller?

RAID controllers should not be used with Unraid, use a plain HBA, LSI recommended.

The controller supports HBA and is actually manufactured by LSI

Then change it to HBA mode, if it's a true HBA instead of an ID it will show the disk model plus serial number, and those never change.

Double checked settings and it looks like it is working in HBA as I see disk name and serials... However, the ending numbers will randomly change sometimes. Not every time, just sometimes. I am wondering if it has to do with some boot order thing because when I first set the array up parity was (sdf), disk 1 was (sdc), disk 2 (sdd), and disk 3 was (sde)

Device names will change. The mappings of sdX are NOT persistent, they should not be relied upon. This will NOT cause any issues.

I figured as much but, the device name should be persistent right? if the mappings of sdX are not persistent but do not affect device names then what else should I be looking at?

  • Community Expert

UnRAID works off the model number/serial information.   If that is not staying constant then you have a HBA related issue.    As was mentioned the sdX type part can change between boots and is not important to UnRAID.

Please post an example of how they change, compared to the earlier screenshot

Here is what happens to me every once in awhile...finally got photos of it.

It adds this crazy extra tag at the end randomly...

That's a controller problem, look for a firmware update, failing that replace it with one of the recommended controllers.

The H200 is on the list so I guess maybe firmware issue then. I seems it was rebranded to there might be newer firmware I wasn't aware of before.
