General Setup questions (SSD, Parity & Dockers)

Featured Replies

Hi there,

First time to use Unraid, please tell me the best options to use as i'm still noob :)

Got 8tb*4 (new) + 6TB*4 (old - 2 seems to have health issues) + SSD 500gb*2 (new)

Currently .. 2 8tb as Parity the rest for Data

& Mainly it'll be for plex and its related apps (might use for torrent also unassigned drive)

1- Is it better to keep 1 Parity 8tb only? If 1 Parity protects 1 drive failure then I'm afraid lol

2- Having WD 6tb with error such as (Reallocated sector count = Raw value; 524 & Type;pree-fail) better to keep it in unassigned ?

3- Since i have 2 SSDs, keep both for Cashe? I need them for plex docker (data/images) & transcoding ......

4- Best plex docker? from plex/linuxserver/binhex ...

Thanx !!

Dual parity is more important when you have more disks. How many disks you need to justify dual parity is often discussed. The more disks you have the more likely you are to have 2 simultaneous failures. If you start with a small number of disks that are all good then there is an extremely good chance you will be able to recover from a single failure before you have another.

See my answer to previous question. In order to recover the data from a missing or failed disk, ALL BITS of parity PLUS ALL BITS of all other disks must be reliably read. Obviously you don't want to include any disks with known problems in the parity array.

I would put both in the cache pool personally. That way you get redundancy and 500GB should be plenty of capacity.

I use linuxserver. binhex is also well supported. The "official" plexinc docker isn't really supported by the Unraid community so you would have to go to the plex forums for support. But the Unraid forums have some of the best support on the internet;)

Thank you!

for question 3 again .. how can i setup the docker for plex data? and how to ensure the transcoding to be there also? just to ensure fastest view ..

There is a support thread for each of the dockers supported by our community. Rather than rehashing all those details, you might just take a look at those threads.

Do NOT use drives with known health issues in the array. Many years ago I lost data because a drive I thought was in perfect health failed, and the drives I knew to be dodgy, predictably failed during the recovery. ALL remaining drives must be read completely perfectly to successfully recover a failed drive.
