Networking dilemma...

Featured Replies

Hi,

Just moved my WHS to Unraid and am loving it at home. However, I move into my student house in about a week and want to take the server with me. There is no wired GE going on in the student household, but I've bought 3 homeplugs and am also thinking about buying a gigabit switch (why would I do this? I'm not quite sure??) So I'm left thinking what would be the best possible setup for me.

Would the correct setup be the following:

ADSL Router --> Gigabit switch --> Homeplug downstairs -->  Homeplug upstairs --> Server (GE)

--> Gigabit switch --> Homeplug upstairs --> Laptop (GE)

Or would it be better to have the gigabit upstairs instead, i.e.

ADSL Router --> Homeplug downstairs --> Homeplug upstairs --> Gigabit switch (upstairs) --> Server & Laptop

Will this network allow simultaneous streaming from more than 1 device? i.e. my laptop + friends laptop + xbox?

Sorry if this is confusing to read, it reflects my current state of mind!

Hope someone can help :)

I've tired to use a homeplug equivalent to stream movies to my bedroom media player  (It was the slingbox version

compatible with homeplug).  It was able to handle a compressed .avi image of movies but was unable to handle a full SD DVD.ISO image.  Throughput is about 1/2 to w2/3 of a 100MB/s wired link.  We ended up putting in a wired connection.

With luck you'll be able to stream one movie through a homeplug connection, but not HD.

I've also used the "200mb" homeplug devices (netscreen).  In my old place they worked perfectly and I could play all of my media fine (DVD ISO, H.264 1080p etc).  In my new place they wont even play DiVX movies without skipping.

All I can say is that alot of people with Homeplug come into the XBMC support channel with streaming problems. YMMV

Take that switch and homeplugs back and get a gigE router than can be used in bridged mode. Then, you basically connect your new router to the ADSL router using wireless and this gets you your internet connection. You plug your computers into the ports on the router to connect you stuff wired in your room. This will allow wired for playing movies and such and wireless for internet access which is typically more than enough.

This is assuming you have a wireless ADSL access point in the basement otherwise you will need a wireless access point in the basement, easy enough with another wireless router.

Your friends or anything else outside your room will have to access the data wirelessly so playing movies could be an issue. You could also do a different combo such as the bridge router in the livingroom to put the unRAID box and Xbox on the same wired connection if that's where you will be watching movies all the time.

Homeplugs are not very good - I did some testing and speed is very bad.

Descent in you try to run it within the same fuse - if not forgot it !
