Unable to restart win 10 vm

Featured Replies

I have two win 10 vm's, one is running ok, the other has stopped & I can't restart it. When I start it, it runs for a few seconds then stops. Below is copy of log file,

Another question, where on the unraid server can I find the "my documents" of the failed vm so I can reclaim some data?

Thanks in advance

Assuming you didn't map "my documents" to a network location on the server, it's inside the vdisk1.img file. You should be able to add another vdisk definition to your working VM and point it at the failed VM's vdisk, then when you start the VM it will show as another drive letter.

Alternatively you could set up another VM fresh, so as not to risk your current good VM, and do what I said on the new VM.

I've managed to setup another vm. Not sure how to add another vdisk definition

Click on the green plus beside Primary vDisk Location.

I copied the location of the failed vm to 2nd vdisk and the vm failed to start. Deleting it and it runs again.

Be more descriptive.

This is what I pasted into the 2nd vdisk of my new vm. It wouldn't start

This is what happens, it locks up and I have to force stop it and remove that line.

When you say it locks up, how long have you waited for it?

Also, try changing the 2nd vDisk Bus to something besides Virtio and see if the behaviour changes.

Unless I am misreading the screenshot you seem to have given the same vdisk as both the primary drive and the second drive?

Primary vDisk Bus: VirtIOSATAIDEUSB

2nd vDisk Location: AutoManual

You're right, I totally missed that. I assumed the OP was following directions.

The dots that normally go round on windows start stop. Refresh the unraid dashboard screen and the vm has a yellow paused symbol

But it doesn't show up as another drive in "This pc"

Post a screenshot of the VM that won't start, and another of the new VM that you are using to recover the data.

Wait, what? I thought it wouldn't start.

If I use the line from the broken vm,

/mnt/user/vdsks/Virtual Win10 1/Windows 10/vdisk1.img

it won't start!

The failed vm,

Hmm. Next option, set up a VM with a live boot CD ISO as the OS install and the problem vdisk as the primary vdisk.

One option for a live boot CD ISO is this. http://www.system-rescue-cd.org/

There are many options, google for windows rescue iso for other ideas.
