What size does the usb drive need to be for unRAID?

Featured Replies

Hi all

Just as a matter of interest, what size memory stick needs to be used for unRAID?  If you're running other apps, such as unMenu etc, I assume these are also installed on the USB drive?

Thanks

I have 4.5.6 and unmenu and its uses 56 meg:

Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sdf1             3.8G   56M  3.7G   2% /boot

unRAID was originally distributed on a 128 Meg USB drive (5 years ago) It still fits on one.

Today, I'd get a 2Gig, or a 4Gig drive (because they are cheap cheaper than the 128 Meg was 5 years ago even).

Don't bother with anything bigger, it will just be a waste.

I have mine on a 1Gig drive.  With everything I've got, there's plenty of room to spare.

I didn't think a new topic was needed so I found this on a search. Is this still valid, that 2-4gb is enough even with loads of extras installed/added? I have a 16gb I was going to use but it sounds like it might be a waste?

still valid.

And in terms of speed of USB, I take it there is no benefit in picking one particular type of USB to another and that affected boot times would be minimal?

No benefit for a faster drive.  (other than you would not want to use a flash drive or USB port that only supports USB 1.0, but I doubt you could find one like that today. It would still work, but it would probably extend the boot time to over 10 minutes.  After the boot you would not know the difference since the flash drive is not accessed frequently.)

I'm using a simple 2GB. I've tried a few different brands and speeds with a Basic account so I could get a feel which I was going to use. Honestly I did notice a slight increase in boot speed, but the biggest I noticed was using a good quality Class 8 SD card in an adapter.

It all ended up boiling down to which fit in my case the cleanest with a direct mother board adapter. LOL

I'd just use a good quality/reliable brand and don't waste your money on a large one.

Slight increase in speed being what....10 seconds?

Yeah nothing to really write home about. Of course I'm guessing it was something like that. 5-10 seconds.

Of course now I'm just happy after I push the button to hit http://tower knowing I'm good to go.

I suppose I could time it sometime opposed to spouting off undocumented findings. LOL
