September 27, 201015 yr Ok something is going wrong and I'm not sure what to do. Here is what I did. Came home from work and array is running good. Finished a preclear cycle on a new drive earlier in the day. I stopped the array then executed a soft power down. I wanted to check the IDLE3 timer on my new WD20EARS drive. So i removed the unRAID USB drive and replaced it with a DOS bootable USB drive to run WDIDLE3. Powered up, checked IDLE3, then powered down. Removed DOS bootable USB drive, put unRAID drive back in. Powered on. Now at tower login I get a message saying SAMBA is stopped. Checked unMenu and the array is still valid. Tried to start SAMBA via unMenu Array Management page but did not work. Stopped array, soft powerdown, then restart. Now all three disks are invalid. Started array and two data disks are valid but parity is not. Currently rebuilding parity but SAMBA is still stopped. Still cannot start SAMBA via unMenu. Not sure what the problem is - need help. My syslog is attached. syslog-2010-09-273.txt
September 27, 201015 yr this happens to me 1 time in 4 on reboots. For some reason it just will not start. reboot and the machine is fine again.
September 28, 201015 yr Author I've already done that several times but I get the same result. I've rebooted my server numerous times before and this never happened once.
September 28, 201015 yr Author Well I got SAMBA working again but haven't tried rebooting yet. I saw a bunch of FAT filesystem errors in my syslog. I found another post that suggested to run a chkdisk, so I did but found no errors. I've been running unRAID on some POS A-data 4GB USB drive that I got free with a Newegg purchase a few years ago. Thinking perhaps it was the problem I prepped and loaded a fresh copy of unRAID 4.5.6 on my new Sandisk cruzer 4GB USB drive. Put that in and it booted successfully. Then I copied the config folder off my old POS USB drive along with unMenu and my other customizations and placed them on the new USB drive. Rebooted the server and it started SAMBA just fine again. My user shares are back but parity is invalid. Currently rebuilding parity. I also saved a backup copy of the entire flash folder from Tower so that I have a backup of my system in case something goes wrong again. The bad news is that I wasted a lot of time farting around tonight. The good news is that I learned a lot and none of my data was lost - unRAID is awesome. Morale of the story - don't trust a free USB drive from Newegg.
