Performance improvements

Featured Replies

Hi

I am using version 4.5 and quite happy, although performance could be better

Also, one very annoying feature is that sometimes the array freezes when I copy lot of files.

It is quite frequently freezes when I being copy a bulk of files (for about a minute!!!), but sometimes it can happen later..

The problem is that I listen to music that is located on unRaid, so during these nasty moments there is no music :(

Are there any performance improvements in recent builds?

What about these locks? I would buy a cache drive (I have PRO version), but I really do not like the fact that this cache is unprotected..

What about version 5.0 beta 2?

Concurrent writes are handled better?

Faster reads?

thanks,

Michael

Another thing worth for me to upgrade - reducing power consumption, that eventually leads to sleep state.

I am using a script for sleep, but reducing also CPU frequency will be very nice if the load is low

wow

thanks,

I am upgrading now..

I am using plain 4.5

Any special instructions, or just as usual replace two files and reboot?

..any clue about locking?

Just the two files need to be replaced.   Note, the button labeled as "restore" was replaced with a command line command

initconfig

Since it sets a new disk configuration and immediately invalidates parity on the prior configuration.  Too many users pressed it when a disk failed thinking it restored data.  Instead, it blew away their parity data and set a new disk configuration without the failed drive.

Also, the whole issue of why pauses occur was discussed in this thread:

You mean this?

3. An I/O stream via Windows PC freezes when same Windows PC is used to access data on a spundown disk.  This is a Windows problem and can not be fixed by unRAID OS.  From examining SMB connection traces, what I have determined is this: When a Windows PC (client) connects to a Server, it opens a single "SMB Connection".  Over this connection it sends it's requests: lookups, read, writes, etc, no matter which Share is being accessed (that is, all shares on the same server are accessed over a single SMB connection).  Hence, say for example, video is being read from the server and rendered on a Windows PC; if from the same Windows PC you now try to access another share with a spundown drive, Windows will use the same connection, resulting in "freeze" of the video while the I/O reqeust to the spundown drive is being serviced.

I have spent a couple of hours looking into this issue on the Windows side and have not found any way to tell Windows to open multiple SMB connections to multiple shares on the same server.  If anyone finds a solution to this, please send to [email protected].

so, still no solution?

Sure.

Never got this at work while working with HP EVA..

If it is a Windows problem, Tom can contact Microsoft support.

They're quite helpful

The only thing you may be able to try is connecting via the DNS name for one Share and then connecting via an IP address to a different Share.

It is kind of outlines here

Nice, so what I need is to add an entry into 'hosts' file, aliasing unRaid server..

I will see if that solves my issues..

many thanks

Upgraded tonight to 4.5.6 and implemented this alias in Hosts file for my Squeeze server.

Thank you guys.

Will update here if it help..

P.S. Do you know any plans on power consumption/adaptive CPU speed/Sleep/Resume?

none from lime-tech.

From other posts it is the cpu voltage you must lower to save power, not much is saved by changing the frequency.

Scripts already exists to put the server to S3 sleep when it is idle and disks spin down, but many motherboards, including the Supermicro board lime-tech uses, will not wake up from sleep  (or at least mine does not, since it turns off power to the LAN controller)

Biggest savings are gotten by using high efficiency power supplies (> 85% efficiency), and green drives that spin slower and use less power.

My server (which is actually the box from Lime) works with that script, but I remember I configured something in the BIOS.

Yes, reducing voltage for CPU will help (that reduces frequency or whatever)

I do not need Dual Core E7400 2.8GHz when I stream songs via Squeezeserver (the Squeeze is running on Windows box), right?

Just thought that will be nice if Tom will implement these 'green features' into core product..

Then you never tried to read a file from a spun-down disk on the HP EVA.

CPU Frequency Scaling is enabled in unRAID.  But you have to load the driver that is proper for you CPU.

Using the powernow_k8 driver, my AMD Athlon X2 Dual Core Processor BE-2400 idles at 1.01 volts and 1gHz, and cranks up automatically to 2.3gHz and 1.41 volts when needed.

This is true and can not be overemphasized ... if you want the biggest impact on power usage, get an 80+ Gold certified PSU, and size it properly so your box is drawing in the sweet spot of 50% of PSU capacity when idle.

Rule of thumb:  Each Watt being used by a box that is always on 24x7x365 is $1 per year in the US.  Replacing an older PSU that is improperly sized can save you over 100 Watts.  Undervolting/underclocking the CPU with P states will only save you 20 Watts or so.

You can also save 20 to 50 Watts by choosing a mobo that has good power management and runs cool... the Northbridge is particularly a power hog on some mobos.  Check SPSR for reviews -- people who want silent PCs need them to run cool and efficient, since waste heat has to be removed and more heat means more noise.

Indeed.

Will see if that workaround in Hosts file will help.

How can I see that additional SMB connection opens up?

Aha!

So, what needs to be done for E7400?
