Tried to update to 6.7.0-rc5 and now I get this error when trying to boot.

  • I've tried another USB port but that doesn't help.
  • Checking the USB drive: bzroot and bzroot-gui are "Zero bytes". This doesn't seem right.
  • Trying to copy new bz* files to the USB drive: can't because it's a "read-only" filesystem (?). (I'm on a Mac)

What do I do now?

Decided to clear the usb drive and do a fresh install and then copy over the config folder. But I can't seem to erase the drive?

I made a backup of the USB about two days ago but the backup is on the array and I don't know which drive, unfortunately.

Put flash in your PC and let it checkdisk. While there make a backup of it.

The only thing that really matters is the config folder on flash. You can always just do a new install to flash and copy the config folder to that new install and you will be good to go.

I always try to get people to come up with some other idea about where to backup their flash besides on the array, because obviously it is very difficult to get to it on the array if you have a flash problem and can't boot.

For future reference, from a working system you can always download a zipped backup of flash at Main - Boot Device - Flash - Flash Backup. It mostly just needs to be backed up anytime you change something in the webUI, since it isn't changed otherwise.

I have CA Backup put mine on an external USB drive formatted NTFS that is automounted in Unassigned Devices. That way I can easily take it to my PC and read it in Windows if I need to restore my flash. Other people have it backup to a share on another computer SMB mounted with Unassigned Devices, for example.

I can't manage to format the USB drive. MacOS disk utility fails when trying.

Sounds like bad USB stick? Try another one? Copy the config folder to your computer if you can.

What about the licence key if I change USB stick?

Copy the keyfile from the old stick to the new one. When booted from the new stick you will have the option to transfer the key to the new stick.

Which file is that? Where is it located on the USB?

It's in the config folder. Ends with .key.

Read more here: https://lime-technology.com/replace-key/

You should also be able to download it using the link in the original registration e-mail.

Thanks, it's copied. Going to try with a new USB stick. Is there a recommended USB stick to use?

I have used SanDisk and Kingston sticks without problem.

I would set up the new stick using the tool from unraid and see if that boots. After that I would remove the config folder from the NEW stick and copy the folder from the old stick to the new one.

This was a SanDisk Ultra 3.0 16GB.

Use USB 2 port for your stick. USB 3 could be unstable.

Ultra should work fine but all sticks could go bad of course. I use SanDisk Ultra Fit 16GB USB 3.1 in USB 2 port since a week (changed from Kingston, needed more compact hardware). Working fine but your milage may vary.

Can a fix this USB drive in some way or should I just throw it into the trash?

Don't format it! Try to check the drive for errors. I don't know how that works on Mac. If and when the stick is repaired, I would back it up and replace the files on the stick using the unraid zip file to fix corrupt system files. Personally, I would not continue using the stick in my server. Just make sure to backup the files on the stick if you can before doing anything.

I have made a new usb stick and booted.

Everythings started but I get this error: "The registered GUID does not match the USB Flash boot device GUID"

Should i do a replace key?

I think in mac you use something called Disk Utilities.

If it really is dead, I would recommend going with USB2 if you are going to buy another.

Flash is used very little by Unraid. The OS actually runs in RAM. The Unraid OS is unpacked fresh from the archives on flash at boot and then the saved configurations from the webUI are applied. After boot, flash is mostly only accessed when saving changes from the webUI. So capacity and speed aren't required. And USB2 is more reliable. That especially applies to the port you plug flash into, but why not just go for a USB2 flash drive also? I know those Ultra Fits run pretty hot. I have some but my Unraid is booting from the USB2 version of the Fit.

Where? In the gui? That would be the case until you transfer the key and installing the new key using the manager in the gui.

Did you check the link Niklas gave above about how to do it?

Sorry i realized that was very little info. Updated that specific post with more info.

The most important when trying to get going again with no flash backup is to know your drive assignments. Do you?

My fit runs hot when writing/reading much data at once. Like booting. But not that hot when the system is running. I think that's normal with small sticks. Less surface area to distribute the heat but not a problem. Designed that way. 😉 I changed my stick from a big Kingston stick to the smaller fit because it was protruding too much at the back of the server. My server is located on the floor in the hallway so I don't want my kids to accidentally hitting the stick and break it (and/or the port or motherboard). 😉

Thank you, yes a read the post, just wanted to make sure. It seems like the drive assignments are already correct. It looks like it looked before. Note, I copied the config folder to the new USB before booting.
