Rebooted server, getting boot failure at bzroot

Featured Replies

Hi everyone

I am a bit frustrated. I recently had to reboot my PC to flush the RAM, they were capping at 95% after a few months of running. However, when i booted the server up again, my bios coudlnt find my USB stick. After removing the USB and reinserting it, my pc could move to the unraid boot screen. Here i got the following error message once attempting to boot at bzroot.

"Loading /bzroot... Failed to read blocks: 0x7"

Does anyone have any advice or guide on how to approach this? I coudlnt find any simliar topics when i searched for it on google...

It looks like i get a "kernel panic"

Best

Rasmus

Do you have a recent backup of flash?

If you plug the USB stick into a Windows (or Mac) system can you read its contents?    If so take the opportunity to make a backup of the config folder as that contains your Unraid license key and all your current configuration information.

OK.     Do you have a copy of the Unraid license key file?    Do you have a recent backup of the flash drive?    Can you copy the config folder off the flash drive as that contains all your current configuration information?

Will the config file also include my docker information, or is that stored on the drives?

I have the original email with my registration key, would that be sufficient? Or can i find the key on my old USB

The config FOLDER contains your docker templates, which is all that's needed to reinstall your dockers just as they were using their appdata, which is on the drives.

The license .key file is also in the config folder on flash.

For future reference, you can download a zipped copy of your flash drive at any time from Main - Boot Device - Flash -Flash Backup.

The config folder will include your docker configuration information.  The actual docker containers and associated files are wherever you configured them to be located (I.e. not on the USB stick).

If the email has the .key file attached then that should be fine.   It should also be present in the config folder on the USB drive if you can read it from there.

Try the plugin CA backup. It will allow you to backup the flash and the appdata as well. Unraid boots to ram, meaning is safe to remove the usb while is on in the event the USB dies, just in case you are running some critical applications. Something happens, as long as you have access to a recent backup you'll be fine.

However, according to @trurl never leave your unraid running without usb. This shall be used in emergency situations only.

It is true that it boots to RAM, but you should definitely NOT remove the flash drive while the server is on. It still needs to be able to write to it occasionally, such as when you make any changes to your settings. More importantly, it needs to write to it when stopping/starting the array. This is how it determines if you have had an unclean shutdown. And, if you remove the flash drive with the server running, it won't mount it again when you put it back. So, once removed, there is no way it will ever be able to access it again until the next boot.

DON'T EVER REMOVE the flash drive while the server is running.

Thanks for correcting me. I meant in the event the USB dies and the server is running. You are right, of course the server needs the usb to save configuration or docker templates
