Plex, ? Which one

Recommended Posts

I had an issue with my Unraid server and in the process of evaluating I tried to update my Plex docker.  The update screen stopped changing, and so the next morning I just hit refresh and the docker was gone.  I decided to re-add, selected the default template (rather than user, thinking maybe better to take defaults). Now my media is not mapped.  I think I can address all of that.

My question for the the general area is, now that I am redoing my Plex setup, what are the current recommendations?  It looks like there is a limetech version, and a LinuxServer.io version of a Plex docker?

I cant find a good summary of the reasons to pick one over the other for Unraid use.  There is obviously some confusion among those using the different versions, as I see posts in the wrong forums because people assume Plex is Plex.   Funny thing is, I’m not even sure now what Plex version/source I uninstalled.

Any current recommendations on what Plex source / version to use with the latest Unraid version?   Does standard stable Unraid support Nvidia GPU passthrough for Plex transcoding (if not, will it soon)?

Thanks!

Ross

Thanks,

I saw that the linuxserver.io version had GPU capabilities, so I went with that one for now.  Not sure if that feature is too new to be stable enough for me...

The last good summary of the Plex options seemed to be from years ago, so I appreciate your input.

The GPU capabilities you refer to are an unRAID Nvidia plugin from Linuxserver.io which allows a discrete Nvidia GPU to be used by docker containers that can take advantage of hardware transcoding.  This plugin does not require that you use the Linuxserver.io Plex docker.

That said, I use the Linuxserver.io Plex docker and an iGPU for hw transcoding and it works very well.

There are actually four different Plex docker containers for unRAID (Linuxserver.io, Binhex, Limetech and Plex. Inc.).  The first two are the best maintained and supported in these forums.

I've been using the official Plex Docker mainly because it is the official one. What would be the reasons to use the Linuxserver.io or Binhex Plex container over the official one?

Support in these forums.  You won't get support here for the Plex, Inc. official docker container.

As I understand it, the LSIO folks lent a hand to Plex in creating their official docker container and they are similar.  I chose the LSIO Plex container because I have several other LSIO containers and there are some efficiencies in using containers from the same maintainer.

Each of the Plex containers also handles updating and "free" vs. Plex Pass versions differently as well, so, pick the one that does things the way you prefer.

LSIO cuz those guys are nice.

Binhex cuz he's nice too (but I had some weird "why-only-me?" problems with his Plex docker a long time ago so hence I picked LSIO).

I avoided the Limetech and Plex official ones because of the lack of "specialisation", for a lack of better terms. Plex guys won't fix problems raised here. LT guys should be focusing on fixing Unraid and not Plex stuff (and I believe the LT Plex docker has been discontinued for quite a while now).

One of the reasons I am using the official Plex container is that the one I started with would sometimes take a week or more to get updated to the latest version. I want to say it was LSIO but I honestly can't remember at this point. I'm sure things have improved in the meantime.
