Userpaul
I have an asus p5w dh deluxe mobo on my main pc with onboard wifi..Realtek RTL8187. I also have two Marvell Yukon 88E8053 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controllers. The problem I have is that when I connect my second LAN port to my UNraid server i loose my wifi signal, when I disconnect the signal reappears . My current configuration is LAN 1 is connected to my virgin cable modem LAN 2 is connected to my UNraid server I have a MSI P6N Diamond series mobo in my server. I realise i probably have to do a little reading on how to reconfigure my setup but if anyone has any suggestions to resolve this issue I would be grateful The few attempts i have tried so far to alter the setting has caused me huge problems with my wifi and win7 laptops.... :'( Link to comment
Rajahal
Sorry, but I really don't think you can run your network like this. You need either a wireless gigabit LAN router or a gigabit switch (or both if you have a lot of wired devices). Here's what I use: Router :D-Link DIR 655 + Switch: TRENDnet TEG-S5g My network looks like this: Cable modem ---- router ))))) wifi to Laptops, iPod, etc. |-----unRAID |-----Desktop PC |-----test server (also unRAID) |-----switch |-----------Xbox 360 |-----------HTPC (Zbox + XBMC) |-----------empty |-----------empty Make sense? fishface
Its worth mentioning, that many routers only have 10/100 ports so it is worth checking the specs ( the D-Link DIR 655 has 10/100/1000 so no problem there), if that is the case, to get optimal performance connect local machines that have Gb NIC to the Gigabit switch ports and not the ports on the router, only connect devices that have 10/100 to the router. My network...with a dose of plagiarism Cable modem ---- router DD-WRT ))))) wifi to Laptops, Briteview 10/100|-----Old laptop, standby seedbox 10/100|----- Printer 10/100|----- 10/100|-----to Gb switch 10/100/1000|-----------to router 10/100/1000|-----------unRAID 10/100/1000|-----------PC1 10/100/1000|-----------PC2 10/100/1000|-----------Server1 10/100/1000|-----------Server2 10/100/1000|-----------empty 10/100/1000|-----------empty You set-up doesn't look good with the information you have provided, a rough and ready network diagram from you would be useful. Userpaul
Well, this is what i think I have Cable to house |----Virgin cable modem to LAN port 1 on PC---10/100/ |---- PC (this is a gigabit port but the icon on my pc shows it as a 100Mbps) I am assuming this is because it's my internet connection. 10/100/1000!----unRAID Onboard WIFI 54Mbps Using Asus Wifi Solo set up as an access point (AP) Both LAN ports on my pc are 1.0Gbps and within the Asus wifi solo setup program I have to select which gigabit controller I want to use to get access to the internet. So on my "network connections page" Network connection 1 shows as shared. So with my server connected to LAN port 2 I can see my "Tower - Main" okay but i cannot connect to the internet to install unMenu (for example) and My laptops are showing as connected to my wifi Access point but cannot connect to my networked drives or the internet. If I unplug LAN port 2 all my laptops can see my network drives and connect to the internet. Additional info WiFi-AP Solo™ Onboard 3-in-1 Wireless LAN Adapter 54 Mbps E2564. Iam currently using Access Point but i do have the following options 1.4.2 Infrastructure mode An Infrastructure wireless network is centered on a wireless access point (AP) that provides Internet access and LAN communication for the wireless stations. In Infrastructure mode, the wireless LAN stations communicate with each other via the wireless AP. In this mode, your WiFi-AP Solo™ functions as a wireless adapter. It communicates with the LAN computers and accesses Internet through the wireless AP. 1.4.3 Ad-hoc mode In the Ad-hoc mode, the WiFi-AP Solo™ acts as a wireless card and connects directly to other wireless device within its operating range. In the Ad-Hoc mode, your computer communicate with other wireless stations without an access point (AP). Link to comment
kenoka
You're essentially using your main computer in place of a router. Unless you have server software to route traffic, assign IP addresses, etc. I don't think it will work this way. It's also possible that the second NIC is just defective. Your unRAID server is probably polling your PC for a DHCP address, and getting back nothing, so it can't really set up the web interface. Your wireless card can act as an access point, but that doesn't mean your PC can act as a router. You need to have a router somewhere in the system. Normally, if you connect two PCs via ethernet cable, you have to use a special crossover cable, so that they don't garble traffic. This allows you to transfer data between two computers, but wouldn't ordinarily allow your laptops or other computers to see the second computer as being on the network. Some people buy motherboards with two NICs in order to use them as a server/firewall. They connect one port to their internet connection and the other to their router. That's useful if they run a webserver at home, or VPN, or asterix, or any number of other internet enabled software. Other people duplex their two NICs in order to maximize their bandwidth for gaming. Link to comment
Userpaul
Thank you for your replies. So it looks like I need to go and spend some money...again If I have to spend money i want to ensure it's future capable but i would also need to be able to use it now. Now that my unRAID server is set up and all the data from my main pc has been transferred over I will over the next few months dismantle the pc and sell it as parts. I want to build / buy 3 HTPC's (I am considering buying 2 Acer Aspire Revo after reading this -- http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=7571.0 by Rajahal. I intend to cable the house for my network rather than use wifi for the TV's in the house, but I will still need wifi for the laptops. So assuming I do not have onboard wifi I need to look for a router and wifi unit as one? And I would plug my cable box into the router / wifi unit. Link to comment
kenoka
Any wireless router will do. If you want the latest standards, just look for a wireless router with 802.11n and gigabit LAN ports. This isn't strictly necessary, because traffic to and from the router is primarily limited by the broadband connection. If you want WoL capability, look for a DDWRT capable router. If you haven't heard of it before, DDWRT is custom firmware that opens up a lot of capabilities in routers that haven't been written in by the manufacturers, but that the hardware is capable of. Wake on LAN, or WoL, is one of those. I use a Netgear WNDR3700, and it's been excellent for me, but everyone has their favorites. I like it because it offers dual band wireless n. Go look on Newegg, and peruse the user reviews for a general sense of the playing field. Once you have the router in place, both your main PC and your unRAID box can connect to the router. Most routers will have four LAN ports. If you need more after your wiring project, you can get a Gigabit switch. Five port consumer models run about $30, and eight port models run as low as $40. I got a TrendNet for $38 at Amazon just recently. Link to comment
Userpaul
Thanks guys I've ordered a D-Link DIR-655 Wireless-N Gigabit Cable --- http://www.ebuyer.com/product/128049 Of course we have nothing like Newegg in the UK :'( Thanks Rajahal for the links. Rajahal
You should be happy with that router, mine has been running 24/7 for several years now. You probably won't have any configuration issues, but if you do just let us know. Link to comment

Userpaul
Well the D-Link DIR-655 Wireless-N Gigabit Adaptor arrived today and it is all setup and running now. I had awful problems initially connecting to the internet took me over 3 hours to get it running correctly. One on my LAN ports disappeared from my pc and was not showing in device manager either! I checked and checked --rebooted everything several times and could not figure out why. Netlimiter ( my firewall) was configured to allow the router to connect to the internet. On my last reboot when i tried to connect again a windows firewall pop-up asked me if i wanted to continue blocking the router. Now that was strange because I do not use the Windows XP firewall Any way I thought why not and clicked the allow box to allow the connection and Hey presto all the lights came on and I was connected. I looked at the Win XP firewall and somehow it was enabled, I have not used the firewall for at least 3 years, anyway i disabled it and everything seems finer now. I have now installed unmenu onto my server, what a great little gui Thanks for you help guys Link to comment
Rajahal
Glad to hear you are up and running. If you didn't know, that router has a feature which lets you plug in a USB drive (flash drive or external) and share it with all computers on the network (or at least all Windows computers). Naturally this is kind of redundant since your unRAID server does the same thing only better, but I figured I would mention it anyway. Link to comment
