Featured Replies

My server did its normal parity check the other day and is now saying it has errors. Can anyone tell me if the disk is ok or should i get it replaced.

is now saying it has errors

That disk has more reallocated than I would be comfortable with. It would be better if you posted complete diagnostics though so we could get a more complete understanding before making recommendations.

Go to Tools - Diagnostics and attach the complete diagnostics zip file to your next post.

It was a disk (media) error, you can run an extended SMART test to confirm if the disk is still failing.

I would replace parity. But before doing that, something else I noticed in your diagnostics. Why do you have an SSD in the parity array?

  • Author

I added it when i first set my server up not knowing SSD were not supposed to be in the array, and have not got round to replacing it or can i just remove it from the array.

The ideal time to remove the SSD would be when you need to rebuild parity, such as now when you may be replacing parity. Then you could just New Config, unassign the SSD, and rebuild parity without it.

  • Author

Ok, so new parity disk. Then do a new config without the SSD.

Thanks pal much appreciated

You want to do the New Config without the SSD and replace parity at the same time, as one operation. If you replace parity first, it will rebuild parity, then if you New Config without the SSD it will rebuild parity again.

And just in case you don't realize it, if you have any data on that SSD you want to keep in the array you will have to copy it to other disks yourself.
