November 12, 201015 yr Guys First ever post - bear with me :-) A couple of nights ago I noticed that Windows XP thinks my UnRAID flash drive was empty. I decided to reboot UnRAID, as a first step to resolution. But having stopped the drives, and rebooted, it just hangs. I examined the flash drive by plugging into an XP machine, and all the normal stuff is there. I also tried various ports on my UnRAID server, but same result - just hangs. I plugged in a monitor to watch the sequence, and after the first screen (blue ASUS m/board), it goes to a second screen where it shows some drives listed then says "Detecting......" After that, the screen goes blank, with only a flashing cursor in the top left corner. I've trawled thru the posts, and reckon i should try a new flash drive. I've backed up all the folders & files on the flash (to the XP laptop). I have seen a webpage that tells me how to install UnRAID on a new flash drive, so i'm OK with that work. But what do i need off my old flash drive, before copying across to new flash ?? thanks in advance Richard
November 12, 201015 yr Try running a repair on the flash drive that seems to not be working. There may be some corruption on it that is stopping it from working. To answer your question: it depends a little on everything you have installed. The things you really really need are in the config folder. If you have unMenu and other stuff installed then you are going to need the unmenu and packages folder also. If you have a folder labeled "custom" you are probably going to want to drag that over also.
November 12, 201015 yr Author Given that UnRAID is down, i assume you are talking about a Windows function. How do i run a repair ??
November 12, 201015 yr Given that UnRAID is down, i assume you are talking about a Windows function. How do i run a repair ?? Yes, from your windows machine: Right click on the USB drive, select Properties, go to tools and under "error-checking" select "check now"
November 12, 201015 yr If the files are there but it won't boot, you might be able to fix it with the "syslinux" command.
November 12, 201015 yr Are you sure the flash drive is set as the boot drive. You should check it in your bios.
November 13, 201015 yr Author Just went into the BIOS, and somehow.......it was set to boot from one of the hard disks. So have reset to boot from the Cruzer and now all is well. But why did it get changed in the first place Wasn't me - i promise :-(
November 13, 201015 yr It's a known "feature" of Asus boards. When you add a new hard disk to it, it tries to help you by assigning it as the boot device.
November 16, 201015 yr Make sure that your motherboard can boot to a flash drive. Older motherboards can't boot to a USB flash drive. My motherboard has two BIOS settings. One for the boot device order, another for the priority of the boot devices. Both BIOS parameters had to be set for the unRAID flash drive to boot. Dave
