[SOLVED] unRAID Randomly Freezing (and some other basic? problems)

Featured Replies

Background: I have a pretty solid computer background but I'm new to setting up any type of server and have no experience with unRAID at all. I've watched quite a few of the Spaceinvader One videos (among others) and have read some guides though so I feel like I have a pretty good idea of what I'm doing. I'm also new to linux in general, which way be relevant because my desktop OS is ubuntu. Now that we have that out of the way, this is what I need help with:

1) General connection - I'd like to be able to access the server using the server name on ubuntu and MAC:

-Windows (I don't have this computer anymore) - I was able to access my server using the server name (http://TrueSource) and never tried using a direct path.

-ubuntu - I can't access the server using the server name but I can access using a direct path (10.0.0.94)

-MAC - I can't access using the server name and when I try to access using a direct path I get prompted for user login information. I tried setting up users with passwords but none of those logins seem to work.

2) My real problem is that the server regularly becomes unresponsive and I haven't been able to find a correlation between what I'm doing with the server and when it stops. All of the hardware is new within the last 6 months and had previously been used in a Windows machine so I'm pretty confident that the hardware is working properly*. I'm happy to provide a list of what I have if that's helpful though. Once the server becomes unresponsive, which could be after a few minutes or a few hours, all I can do is physically power off my machine (I understand that once I have all of my data transferred into the array this will be a major problem, but I've just started setting up the server so right now this is an annoyance.) I'm not really sure where to start because I don't know how to access any type of log file after the server stops and before it gets shut down. This is definitely my main problem and where I need help.

(3) It seems like I should be able to perform a graceful shutdown from the command prompt once the server stops responding but everything I try results in a password prompt and none of the passwords I try work. I think I'm going to need to use the prompt to help with my main problem (2) so some guidance here would be really helpful.

Please let me know if any additional information is needed or if any of this in unclear. I'm really excited to get my server set up but I can't do anything while it's regularly unresponsive.

*My server was becoming unresponsive before I did this but maybe it's relevant?: I had trouble with my raid card and amended my unRAID OS configuration file to look like this:

kernel /bzimage
append initrd=/bzroot amd_iommu=off

EDIT: Solved this problem by disabling C-state on my motherboard.

Hardware used could be important, especially if it's a Ryzen based system.

Thanks! I'll check it out. Do you know anything about (1) or (3) above? Those are definitely minor concerns but I'd love to get them resolved too.

If the computer crashed it won't accept any password, you might still see a blinking cursor, password for console login is the root password.
