FAQ about testing my first unRaid v6.x NAS

Featured Replies

Hi all,

1) I have a Asmedia chipset HBA 2 port + eSATA pcie x 1 card, does anyone have good

experience running this chipset with unRAID v6.x?

2) Does eSATA port  / USB3.0 counted as 1 storage device in my BASIC tier 1 license?

3) Which is more stable: eSATA port / USB3.0 to have an external backup drive, running attached to unRAID NAS server?

(I read in some forums that USB is not as stable as using SATA for home user NAS)

4) Cache SSD drive, what capacity to need to get? I have some 60GB SSDs would that be sufficient,

I am not running any VMs but some dockers + Windows shares.

The Asmedia 106X 2 port controller works well, any Asmedia with more than 2 ports will have a SATA port multiplier and that's not recommended, not clear if you mean 2 ports + external port, or 2 ports total and one can be external.

Any connected storage device counts, doesn't matter if it's connected by SATA, USB, eSATA, etc

eSATA would be better, but avoid cables longer than 1m.

That's really depends on what you need to use it for, for Dockers 20GB should be more than enough, any user shares can use cache or not, it's up to you.

@johnnie.blackIt is actually a 2 x  eSATA or 2 x port SATA III connection.

You can either configure the jump to behave an 2 x eSATA or 2 x port SATA III

Link: ASM 1061 2 x eSATA / 2 x SATA III PCIE card

I don't this is a SATA port multiplier card (if I am not mistaken)

Yes, that's fine, assuming the controller itself is good quality, the 2 port Asmedia chipset usually works great.
