My First unRAID Build

So after much time and deliberation i have decided that i will be building a unRAID server, and thats apposed to buying say a QNAP or building a freeNAS server.

I have managed to gather some parts together to reuse as per below.

 

Asus X99-M WS/SE

Intel i7 5820K 6C12T 3.30GHz

32GB Corsair DDR4 RAM

Drives:

3x10tb WD RED (Shucked)

2x12tb WD RED (Shucked)

Samsung Evo Plus 2tb NVME

Samsung 1tb SSD

850W EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G1+ Single Rail 70.8A

Fractal Design Node 804 Case

 

I have no GPU at the moment, but need to get one any recommendations?

 

My Plan is to use this as a Storage server for my media i will run a couple of Dokers such as Serviio and maybe a PiHole.

I will also need to run a VM. Specifically a OSX VM so that i can use Final Cut. - hence i would like to know whats the best GPU to use. dont think i need anything fancy was thinking best bang for buck. maybe a GTX1060 or something like that??

 

I also need to get a USB drive to boot from i have an internal header to USB port so can put it inside the case. my worry is if the USB Drive goes faulty does that mean i loose all of my system? cant be that can it??

 

but any advise would be great and just some general knowledge on what i should/shouldn't and can/cant do :)

I notice you have 2 different sized SSDs in your list. How do you plan to use them?

So my plan is to use the 1tb ssd as the cache drive and the 2tb name as the drive i use for my vms
