January 10, 201115 yr Hello all I have just completed a new unRAID server build using a mini-itx chenbro ES34069 NAS Chassis http://www.mini-itx.com/store/?c=42#ES34069-180W and a Gigabyte GA-D525 Motherboard fitted with 2GB of DDR3 ram http://www.mini-itx.com/store/?c=71 This motherboard has 4 onboard sata ports which have my parity and 3 data drives attached. It also has an onboard IDE connector, which currently has nothing attached to it. Do you think I would benefit in any way by adding a small cache drive to this port using a 2.5" laptop drive ? Say 80 to 100GB or would the performance gain not be worth it ? I have read of course that a cache drive should normally be the fastest drive in the system, naturally it would not in this case. I have a couple of IDE 2.5" 80GB drives lying around. Any thoughts would be welcomed. Regards Pete
January 10, 201115 yr Maybe just try it... The main reason I use my cache drive is to hold some other programs I run. Peter
January 10, 201115 yr I've tried it with an old 60G 2.5 IDE laptop drive and it was slower than writing to my array of newer 1.5TB/2TB drives. But, give it a go.
January 10, 201115 yr Author Thanks for the thoughts so far. Jamerson9 That is what I think may happen too. My array drives are all new 1.5TB units. Given the hassle to dismantle the case and fit the 2.5" drive now, I may not bother. Pete
