Test network between Unraid and my desktop

Featured Replies

Seems I may have a network problem.  Don't know if it's a switch thing, NIC thing, or cat5e thing :D  Is there any tool to put on Unraid for me to do some testing?  I'm having some problems in Parsec gaming.  From logs, it shows my network, though wired, is not performing well consistently.  My transfer from NAS to Desktop has never been very fast as well.  I always suspected this, but never had any motivation to fix it, so as long as I can access and stream shows from NAS fine.  But now, I'm using Parsec, I think there's no room for lag.   I want to fix the problem, if there's any.  Any suggestions?

iperf, included with the nerdpack plugin.

Is this good enough?  Could this possibly change over time?  As I don't know when gaming via Parsec, the performance is as good.

For testing you should use a single stream, and if all is working correctly it still should give close to line speed.

This is enough, single stream is default

That's low, with gigabit you should easily get line speed, or very close to that, try differente NICs/cables/switch

Can I plug direct wire between NUC and NAS?

I've re-used old Cat5e IO, maybe that could be one of the reasons?

Yes, if you assign static IP addresses.

Now, I don't know whether to be happy or not :D  I now know more or less where to start troubleshooting.  Either it's the switch, or the internal wiring between walls, or the old Cat5e IOs that I reused.

@JorgeB, when I was testing earlier with the very bad results, I was downloading via torrent 8 MBps.  Does that affect my testing via iperf?  Today, nothings downloading, the following are the results.

Why is there such a big variance?

Much better, but still some fluctuation in the beginning.

  • Author

Any idea why there's this fluctuation?  How do I fix this?  Do my downloading from the NAS itself affect performance?

If it's using the same NIC yes.

  • Author

The fact that it goes to good performance, and dips, can we presume there's nothing wrong with my IO ports, and cables?

  • Community Expert

I don't like to assume anything.

Is it normal to have some inconsistencies in iperf depending on what the server is doing at the time?

I usually test with the server not doing anything so there's no interference in the test.

Hey try this. I had the same problem and it ended up being the a network option in the tips and tweaks plugin.
