Canada and US: Hitachi 2TB $99

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

Newegg in canada has a Hitachi External 2TB drive on sale for $99. Reports claim that it has the HDS722020ALA330 drive inside. Pop the enclosure open, and voila! :)

May be a good solution to mix up the drive types in our chassis (I seem to predominantly have Greens)...

EDIT: Looks like Newegg US has the same deal!: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145326

Actually it's $89.99 at Newegg US with promo code: HITACHI123

Excellent point! And shipping is free! (darn rotten americans!! ;))

I might go for one of these guys. Anyone know how these run in an UnRaid server, as far as heat and power consumption are concerned?

Also, I did some more reading since I posted, and some people are saying the warranty on the drive is voided if you pull it out of the case... Anyone familiar with this?

They don't, at least not as of yet.  See the Hard drive forum for more information.

Helps if I read the title of the thread.  Disregard the above comment.

This is more than likely the case.  I had a couple drives that were in externals and I used the warranty checker on the manufacturers website.  They reported that the drive was not eligible for warranty replacement, which makes sense since it was supposed to be in case and never looked at by a user.  Most of those externals will have a sticker on the inside that says "Void if Removed"

I thought the 2TB HDS722020ALA330 Hitachi drives were on the recommended list?

That makes sense... Unfortunate :(.

Crap, I need to read closer and actually pay attention to what size the HD is.  I had 3TB drives on my mind and it naturally progressed from there.

Thanks for point it out and you are correct these 2TB drives will work just fine.  I have 2 in my array right now and love them.

No worries. Probably doesn't help when the 3TB thread is right beside this one :).

If they still had warranty, I would definitely grab a couple of these guys as space is starting to get low (Less then 3TBs free space remaining! Whatever will I do? ;)). The no warranty things makes me a little nervous though.... Sigh.

Oh no, the horror... :P

I agree, with the problems HD can have it is not really worth the risk.  You can probably keep the case and place the drive back in it if need be, but I am not sure it is worth the trouble.

Also a lot of times an external drive's warranty is much lower if it isn't voided when you open the case. You can open up a drive and then find out you only have a year warranty vs 3 or 5. :(

How the heck did you "pop" the enclosure open? I can't find any obvious access points.

edit: after destroying the first case (I bought 3), I discovered that you have to pry the front faceplate off (with the hitachi light on it). Once that pops out there are two screws. Undo them and you can slide the top part of the cover back about 5mm to open the case completely.
