disc temperature increases unforeseen

Featured Replies

hello,

3 hours ago i started watching a movie from my server.

there is no other action going on (no parity check, no acceess otherwise, no copy procedures)

after 2 hours i got warning mails from my server regarding the disc temperature.

i'm curious, this never happened before. temperature got up by 10°C

is there any thing i could check for?

my server only uses the basic unraid including unraidmenu. nothing more.

my syslog is only posting the email reports and not showing any suspicous acitivites

what are basic things you would check for?

Fan failure?

Blocked air-flow through server.  (or, as already mentioned, a failed fan)

  • Author

checked the fans. all are running as usual.

i spinned down all discs now, waiting for a cooldown.

also i will take a close watch at temperature changes related to future actions / parity / accessing / writing.

maybe i can figure something out

  • Author

can this issue be related ?

i took a look in my syslog after i spun down every disc.

my syslog looks like:

Jan 25 16:29:21 Tower kernel:
Jan 25 16:30:22 Tower kernel: mdcmd (38208): spindown 0
Jan 25 16:30:22 Tower kernel:
Jan 25 16:30:22 Tower kernel: mdcmd (38209): spindown 1
Jan 25 16:30:22 Tower kernel:
Jan 25 16:30:23 Tower kernel: mdcmd (38211): spindown 2
Jan 25 16:30:23 Tower kernel:
Jan 25 16:30:23 Tower kernel: mdcmd (38212): spindown 3
Jan 25 16:30:23 Tower kernel:
Jan 25 16:31:24 Tower kernel: mdcmd (38223): spindown 0
Jan 25 16:31:24 Tower kernel:
Jan 25 16:31:24 Tower kernel: mdcmd (38224): spindown 1
Jan 25 16:31:24 Tower kernel:

Jan 25 16:31:25 Tower kernel:
Jan 25 16:31:25 Tower kernel: mdcmd (38226): spindown 3

it was repeated for 6,5h, spamming me 3000 lines in my syslog with spindown trys.

any idea? looks like there is no response.

but in my unraid main menus it tells me that discs are down

Eithere a fan or a false reporting. Id bet more than anything a fan.

I would not let this continue. unRaid manages spindowns by monitoring the drive for activity. But there are certain things that can spin up a disk without unRaid recognizing it as a valid reason to spinup the disk. An example is running a smart report. When unRaid notices that the drive has spun up it will slam it back down. Possibly so fast that the drive has to be spin up again only to be spun down by unRaid again. Looks like that is happening to you over and over again. I would be worried about the wear and tear on the drives. You need to figure out why this is happening. Could be that a power down for a few minutes and then power it back up and see if it stops.

i spun up all discs after i saw the syslog report.

after 1 hour it started spinning down again.

everything spun down instantly without repeating.

so i really dont know what exactly the reason was for the repeating before

what fan could be causing this? i mean i have had heat issues before (like i mentioned in the first post of this topic)

it would explain a lot, but i couldnt find any fan that wasnt running

After you have verified fans and all are operating correctly, I would consider the possibility that your temp checks may be a little too zealous.  Perhaps the temp was completely normal for that drive model under load.  You may want to raise the warning temp level for that drive.

How high was it, and what model of drive was it?

  • Author

Parity: 00J_WD-WCAYY0218484 (Western Digital, 2 TB) - 52°C

Data: SAMSUNG HD203 WI (SpinPoint F3 2TB) - 54°C

Those temperature seem very high. Have you visually inspected your fan operation?

yes.

the air flow in my tower is pretty bad i think.

i use 3 case fans, 1 CPU fan, 1 PSU fan

1 case fan is at the front blowing air into the tower

the air streams to the back, where my other 2 fans are blowing it out.

never the less, my tower is getting hot up to 45°C when accessing a movie file for over 2 hours.

idle temp is around 36°C

all for discs have a difference from around 4-5°C.

the reason is - where i'm pretty sure - the architecture of my case. its meant to be a flatt HTPC case

this will become my next case

http://www.idealo.de/preisvergleich/OffersOfProduct/979445_-centurion-590-schwarz-coolermaster.html

and in the near future i will go with this drive cage:

http://www.amazon.de/Supermicro-Storage-CSE-M35T-1B-Festplatten-Einschub/dp/B003VV0EF6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1294852690&sr=8-1

i really hope i can set up a better air flow.

but thats not really the issue here i think.

lets close the topic.

the overtemp thing only happened once. if it will come back somehow i will continue this topic and look a bit deeper

Do you have any photos you can provide so we can see in the case as well how your drives are posistioned around your fans?

Are you drives up high and your fans down low. Basically anything so we can get more eyes on this.

thank you, but i have read some articles regarding fan/drive setup and already know, that my airflow is below good.

its because of the htpc tower. u need to install disks in 3 locations and only one of those 3 spots can use a fan right behind it.

my issue with temperatures only showed up once. i will watch it closely over the next month

Just a heads up - those drive cages come with loud fans that most people replace.  If you can find it, I recommend the ICY DOCK MB455SPF-B instead.  They come with better fans that don't need to be replaced.

I also plan on trying out the NORCO SS-500 soon.  I've read that the fan is easily replaced, and it is quite cheap to boot.  I also prefer Norco's drive trays to either Supermicro or Icy Dock.

Rajahal

Yeah please let us know what your results are. I'm kinda interested in that setup too.

Not to worry, I don't seem to be physically capable of NOT talking about every bit of hardware I've ever used... :P

I so dislike getting a purchase urge... Now that you pointed it out, I'd like to pick up the Norco SS-500 to give it a shot, as the price is right and the quality looks good. But ... I only have 3 data drives and 1 parity drive in the array right now with 2 drives waiting for 5.0 beta 3 and possible SK SAS patches for the 1068E-based BR10i controller. I even have 6 more empty drive bays in my existing Cooler Master 4-in-3 mounts. When I was troubleshooting my last drive RMA the CM4-in-3 were a real PITA to swap drives out from. I want simpler power cabling and easier drive changing. Must resist...

So please keep us informed on how the Norco SS-500 turns out.

It appears the enclosure that Rajahal posted looks differently on another website.

http://www.excaliberpc.com/593916/norco-ss-500-5-bay-sata-sas.html

NewEgg shows it completely enclosed rear, but this other website shows it open. NewEgg it appears you can not use all locking Sata cables because of the proximety to each other, but that website I posted it appears you can and easily jumper aka change the fan speed.

I wonder which is the old and which is the new design. ;)

Sigh...ordered.  I'm a sucker for peer pressure.  Eh, what's another Benjamin spent on server parts?

I'll post a full review comparing the Supermicro, Icy Dock, and Norco before too long.  Not quite sure if I'll post it on these forums or on another site soon to go live ;)

^ hint of things to come.

Oh, and my guess is that Newegg has the newer model.  The drive trays on the ExcaliberPC one look quite different from the drive trays on the Norco 4220/4224 (which look identical to the Newegg model).

I've got 3 of the ones pictured on newegg from xcase in the UK. There is a jumper to change the fan speed but the are still noisy at 1/2 speed. Sata locking cables do fit.

Have you tried replacing the fans?  Newegg reviews indicate it is easy to do.

Are they 92mm or 80mm. I've seen both listed?

As I understand it, both will work...but 92mm should be the better option.

The fans are 80mm I think but i'll check. I dont think a 92mm will fit (There is an extra picture on the newegg site of the back if you click on the pictures to enlarge them). I am going to replace the fans but have not yet. There is a 2 pin fan header with the fan connected but there is also a 3 pin fan header on so maybe connecting to this header will give some pwm control. I've still got one to put in so i'll take the back off (you need to do this to change the jumper for the fan speed) and post some picks of it removed.
