Is there a way to prevent all drives from starting up at once?

Featured Replies

Hello everyone.  I am using UNRAID on an older computer and currently have 6 drives in it.  I am thinking about adding another 2 and while I think my power supply should be able to handle it, I was wondering if there was a way to have when UNRAID starts up that it only spins up one drive at a time.  I'm just worried about drawing all that power at once when all drives spin up at the same time.  Thanks.

PS.  Here is a picture of my PSU in case you guys find that helpful.

Some controllers have this option, usually called staggered spin up, but nothing that can be controlled directly by Unraid.

Thank you for your reply.  How would I know if my controller supports this.  And if it does, how would I use it?  I just started getting into using an old PC as an UNRAID server not that long ago so there is still a lot I don't know or understand.  Thank you.

Look for the controller manual/BIOS, it will never be supported with onboard SATA ports, or basic SATA port controllers.

Should be noted that if you have your drives set to spin down then unraid can spin them all up simultaneously for a parity check, if another drive goes down etc.

Also notice from the photo 2 +12V rails. Wonder what else might be a reason to worry about this "older computer"?

I have a dual Xeon e5-2690 system with a 970 gpu, 4x 10GbE, 12x HDD, 2x ssd and 2x nvme and I never cross 300w, so I doubt it'll be an issue with only 6 HDD on a much lower tdp cpu... Are you actually having issues, or is it just a concern?

No, I'm not having any issues.  Just a concern.  I ordered some new drives and going to install them when they get here.  Just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to damage anything or mess anything up if all those drives did go over my power supply's wattage when spinning up.  Thank you.
