  • unRAID 6.6.7 FAILS TO RECOGNIZE DRIVE AS PRECLEARED

    • Annoyance

    Successfully precleared a hard-drive using PreClear 2019.03.10

Assigned drive to disk array and INSTEAD of it becoming an active member of the array, unRAID began a (another) clearing process!

(This will now be running for days, defeating the purpose of it being precleared before adding the drive to the array.)

Note: Have previously precleared drives in the same fashion (drives used in the current array), without an issue.

This wouldn't be an Unraid problem, either the disk wasn't properly cleared or it was a problem with preclear, you should post in that thread together with the preclear log if you have it.

Not a Preclear Plugin problem. He(she) has formated it to XFS with Unassigned Devices, then added it to array. The preclear signature in the beginning of the disk has been erased during partition creation, so the system did not recognized it as precleared.

It's a normal behavior and should be closed.

Yep, that would explain it. :)

gfjardim may well be correct as to why unRAID did not detect the precleared condition.  As far as preclear functioning,  I'm sure he would know, and most certainly in this case the disk WAS formatted in Unassigned Devices BEFORE adding it to the array...  guess that takes the onus off of unRAID if the signature gets 'wiped' upon formatting and the precleared condition could not be recognized.  I imagine this should be documented somewhere, but I've never seen it.  Followed the procedure of a YouTube video on adding a disk to an array.  The "little detail" on adding the disk to the array BEFORE formatting was omitted in the video (just stated that it had to be formatted before it could be mounted).  Would be a procedural issue in this case that one needs to be aware of... thank-you for the input and the response.

Formatting not only removes the signature, it writes data to the disk, so it is no longer cleared. The filesystem format is data, whether or not there are any files written. A blank formatted disk is NOT clear, so it can't be added to the array without breaking parity.

Think of formatting as adding in filing cabinets to an empty room. There may not be any documents in the file cabinets yet, but they still take up space in the room.
