  1. Can confirm this solved the problem. I was also unable to play files in VLC (other media players worked fine). But as soon as I touched a file, VLC suddenly started working. Did you end up writing a script to recursively scan all directories and touch all files? Mind sharing?
  2. Hah fair point I was kinda hoping it was just that simple. Is 6.8.2 (a little over a year old) really that "insecure"? It's been on my todo list for sure. If anyone else confirmed that the latest version DOES indeed keep unspun drives unspun when waking from sleep, that would definitely be more motivation for me to do the update.
  3. Unraid 6.8.2 using Dynamix S3 Sleep, ALL my drives come back up spinning on wake. Even if I manually spin them down before sleep. Is there any alternative way to ensure unused/unspun drives don't spin up on wake (it just seems wasteful). Thanks
  4. Having same problem (Your input can't be opened). Only happens when trying to stream a file off a read only share with VLC (other media players work fine). It's almost like VLC is trying to write to the file/share maybe? Has anyone found a resolution yet? *when setting VLC messages to debug mode, this is the only interesting thing I see... No idea what to do with that information (or if it's even relevant).
  5. *Forgot to mention, this is JBOD and NOT part of the array. These are for some spare junk drives I have. *and that's a concerning thought about the drives still generating heat even while sleeping... Can anyone confirm/deny? The data on these disks isn't critical, but still... Or perhaps somebody can recommend a better way to utilize these 4 spare disks I have (needs to be external USB)?
  6. I have one of these 4 bay sata enclosures... https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003X26VV4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 And UnRaid just sent me an alert that a disk was warm (47c). I went and checked, and the bay was in SLEEP mode (orange lights, no fans spinning, so it was definitely asleep). And at least the disk on the top (the only one I could reach) felt cool. The exact same thing happened the other day (although the bay was awake, just not in use). Here's the really odd thing - I pointed a big room fan at the box (with the front cover open), and about 5 minutes later, unraid said that the drive in question had returned to 'safe' temperature. Also, I've NEVER been able to see the actual temps of the drives (in my unassigned devices section, I just get a * for all the temps), so I don't know how unraid was even reading the temps (especially while the bay was sleeping). A failing sensor/false positive was my first guess, but anyway to troubleshoot this and figure out what's for sure going on? Or at least figure out why unaid isn't reporting the temps in my dashboard? Thanks
  7. That app looks great, but still haven trouble. I went into bios and set "Power On By PCI-E/PCI" to enabled (that was the only thing that made mention of WOL). Confirmed that ethtool shows "Wake-on: g". Unraid 6.8.2. WakeMeOnLan shows the correct On/Off status for my server (so I know I have the ip/mac right). But the app is still unable to wake from sleep (only way to wake is with keyboard). For the properties section I only have the ip/mac, do I need to configure anything for the broadcast or port number? *and both machines are on the same subnet so I don't think its a routing issue... I can ping it when its awake
  8. I imagine a lot of people are running a Windows workstation with a second Unraid box as a media store, so how do you guys wake your sleeping Unraid server? Is there something built into Windows (10), or a simple script, or a 3rd party app, etc...? Thanks
  9. *yup looks like the 'is parity already valid' check box doesn't even exist unless you're adding a Parity drive. Just added the pre cleared drives and everything looks good. Marking as Solved.
  10. Ahhh ok I was indeed adding a new parity disk. So it's doing a parity sync now, but I still have a couple un assigned drives (pre cleared) waiting to be added. So when the parity sync is finished, you're saying I can safely check the 'skip the parity sync' check box when adding the remaining (non parity) drives?
  11. I'm pretty sure the answer to this question is "yes", but is it safe to skip the parity check/sync when adding a new disk to your array IF the disk is already pre cleared? The parity (even in a dual parity drive setup) should be unchanged if the new drive being added to the array is all zeros, right? Thanks.
  12. Bleh... Well decided that the above tutorial was the only option available, but it also looks like it's missing something. The very first step (run sensors-detect) doesn't contain anything about "#----cut here---- # Chip drivers". A little googling seems to suggest maybe I need to add 'coretemp' drivers to /etc/modules? Confirm/deny? And if so, how? Has anyone been able to successfully implement the above tutorial?
  13. Plugin looks great, just had a few questions... - I assume there is one hash file per actual file? And we can specify where these hashes are stored (so they can be backed up?). - What does the performance impact look like? Let's say we add a 1 gig file to a typical 200MB/sec hard disk. How long will it take to generate the hash (assume this happens automatically behind the scenes)? How long will it take to validate that same file? - Any differences between this and btrfs scrub (in terms of detecting file corruption/early drive failure)? Thanks
  14. Ordered 2x of the Asmedia 106X, but doesn't look like they will get here for a few weeks at least... If anyone has any other 2-4 port pcie x1 cards they recommend let me know...
  15. Yup seems to be working fine so far (although I've yet to actually build my array, still just pre clearing 100TB of disks). Just make sure you either build your flash drive with UEFI support (click the hidden tick box in the unraid flash maker wizard) or enable the CSM legacy features when trying to boot your unraid flash. The only concern with this board is the limited PCIe slots (assuming you want to add a 10g nic), however I think these PCIe x1 sata expansion cards could solve that problem (assuming you need more than 8 sata ports). Thanks! That comparison is very helpful. So it sounds like the main problem with the Marvel cards relates to having IOMMU enabled, but in RobJ's post he hinted at a potential patch to fix it? Can anyone confirm this is no longer an issue? Ordering two of those 9215's (which according to your tests, would give me 200MB if I only used two ports), would give me exactly what I need...
  16. Well I found this... https://kmwoley.com/blog/controlling-case-fans-based-on-hard-drive-temperature/ Seems like a lot of work though... Is there really no better way?
  17. Hrmm all the Asmedia 106X I found are on Ebay, shipping from China so won't get here till late feb early april (but they come with one free Coronavirus). The JMB582's seem to be 30+ bucks, seems a bit pricey for a 2 port card. I suppose these would work... but any other options? *And do I need to worry about bandwidth? My MB is PCIe gen 4 if that matters... I would think a x1 slot can handle 4 HDs (200ishMB sec reads), so 800MB total, right?
  18. Did a little more research, and according to this random person on the internet... https://delightlylinux.wordpress.com/2019/07/24/more-sata-ports-for-linux/ this card... https://www.amazon.com/IO-Crest-SI-PEX40108-PCI-Express-Profile/dp/B01IDNSUNO/ref=as_li_ss_tl?keywords=IOCrest+SI-PEX40064+PCI-Express+2.0+Low+Profile+Ready+SATA+III+(6.0+Gb/s)+Controller+Card&qid=1563990250&s=gateway&sr=8-1&&linkCode=sl1&tag=delightlylinux-20&linkId=00a744bae93ce60847f0b851e17ab0e0&language=en_US (or this one?) https://www.amazon.com/IO-Crest-Controller-Non-Raid-SI-PEX40064/dp/B00AZ9T3OU/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?keywords=sata+pcie+x1+4+port&qid=1580514027&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzOTRBSURKMzdLNDJUJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMjY2MjU3MzJTNEFIWVJXTlBBUyZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwMjA2MjE5M0hOVkxKMVI3SFBRVSZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU= is supposedly " 100% compatible with Linux out of the box!", even though it uses the Marvell chip. Has anyone been successful with this card + unraid (or any 4 port pcie x1 card)?
  19. Are there pcie x1 cards that DO work with linux? I only need 2 ports per card really (since I have 3 free slots)...
  20. So I went with this Asus-TUF-X570-Plus motherboard... https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-TUF-X570-Plus-Motherboard-Lighting/dp/B07SXFK1TP ...thinking it could easily be expanded with a 10gig pcie card down the road. However, I'm now realizing that the two pcie x16 slots are being taken up by my video card (needed due to no cpu video), and my LSI 9211-8i (needed due to only 8 onboard sata ports). So that leaves 3 pcie x1 slots... I thought they made pcie x1 nics, but I can't seem to find any. They do make Thunderbolt 3 10 gig adapters... But does this MB support Thunderbolt 3? It has a USB C port, but I didn't think that was always the same thing... What are my options here? Thanks *Ok hang on a second, why didn't I just buy two of these instead of this LSI 9211-8i... https://www.amazon.com/SHINESTAR-Splitter-Controller-Expansion-Non-Raid/dp/B07KNXZFRH/ref=sr_1_4?gclid=Cj0KCQiAvc_xBRCYARIsAC5QT9kQnpw0x9IsIiGDcrpbrLffV3RFjzWi_bcwCE4CK_5HKZRwsfQV9UUaAkFLEALw_wcB&hvadid=390347716502&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9030794&hvnetw=g&hvpos=1t1&hvqmt=e&hvrand=4877827003080337123&hvtargid=kwd-833444068722&hydadcr=25684_10972881&keywords=pcie+x1+sata+expansion+card&qid=1580508496&sr=8-4 Won't two of those effectively replace the LSI card? And they will free up the one remaining pcie x16 slot to be used for a 10g nic?
  21. Hrmm dunno about that... Seems like that would give you an inaccurate reading for one drive at best. I want to make sure as soon as ANY one drive in the array gets a little warm, the fans (3 front + 3 on the internal fan wall) all ramp up.
  22. I'm trying to control my case fan speeds based on the temps of my drives (for an Asus X570-Plus). I only see one community plugin relating to fan speed (Dynamix Auto Fan Control), however after trying it the PWM dropdown just displays 'none' and the 'detect' buttons do nothing. And I'm not even sure if this plugin can control speed based on drive temps (or if the plugin is even still supported). I posted on the massive 'Dynamix' thread over on the plugins forum, but I'm curious if there is any alternative way to control the fans. From bios I can set profiles, but they're all based on the MB temp sensor. It seems like a pretty common feature request for a NAS centric OS, I'm surprised unraid doesn't have any built in way to do this... So how do you guys control your drive fans?
  23. Having trouble with AutoFan 1.5 (UnRaid 6.8.2) the only option for PWM controller is 'none', and the 'detect' buttons do nothing. My Asus X570-Plus has 6 pwm fan ports, and I am only using two (the CPU for the cpu fan and CPU-OPT which is connected to a fan hub powering the front 6 drive bay fans). Everything looks fine in bios. I really want to control the speed of this fan hub based on the temp of the drives if that's possible... Any ideas?
  24. Ahh cool yes there was a CSM section, so I enabled that, and set all the (4 or so) options to 'legacy/oprom' instead of UEFI. My memtest flash drive boots now! I'll bet if I had enabled this earlier, my first unraid flash drive would have booted (instead I had to make a second one and enable the UEFI tick box under the "Customize" section).
  25. Ermm from the wiki... Guess I need to download from memtests website and make a second bootable flash? *well dang just made a bootable flash using the utility found on memtest.org (http://www.memtest.org/download/5.01/memtest86+-5.01.usb.installer.zip) but it won't boot (just goes straight to bios). Similar to the problem when first setting up UnRaid (it went straight to bios unless I checked the "Allow UEFI Boot" when running the flash tool). Is there somewhere in my bios where I can enable these 'non UEFI boot' devices? I enabled/disabled "Legacy USB Support", enabled/disabled "Fast Boot", but I don't see any other options relating to booting/UEFI...
