  1. Can confirm this solved the problem. I was also unable to play files in VLC (other media players worked fine). But as soon as I touched a file, VLC suddenly started working. Did you end up writing a script to recursively scan all directories and touch all files? Mind sharing?
  2. Hah fair point I was kinda hoping it was just that simple. Is 6.8.2 (a little over a year old) really that "insecure"? It's been on my todo list for sure. If anyone else confirmed that the latest version DOES indeed keep unspun drives unspun when waking from sleep, that would definitely be more motivation for me to do the update.
  3. Unraid 6.8.2 using Dynamix S3 Sleep, ALL my drives come back up spinning on wake. Even if I manually spin them down before sleep. Is there any alternative way to ensure unused/unspun drives don't spin up on wake (it just seems wasteful). Thanks
  4. Bleh... Well decided that the above tutorial was the only option available, but it also looks like it's missing something. The very first step (run sensors-detect) doesn't contain anything about "#----cut here---- # Chip drivers". A little googling seems to suggest maybe I need to add 'coretemp' drivers to /etc/modules? Confirm/deny? And if so, how? Has anyone been able to successfully implement the above tutorial?
  5. Plugin looks great, just had a few questions... - I assume there is one hash file per actual file? And we can specify where these hashes are stored (so they can be backed up?). - What does the performance impact look like? Let's say we add a 1 gig file to a typical 200MB/sec hard disk. How long will it take to generate the hash (assume this happens automatically behind the scenes)? How long will it take to validate that same file? - Any differences between this and btrfs scrub (in terms of detecting file corruption/early drive failure)? Thanks
  6. Well I found this... https://kmwoley.com/blog/controlling-case-fans-based-on-hard-drive-temperature/ Seems like a lot of work though... Is there really no better way?
  7. Hrmm dunno about that... Seems like that would give you an inaccurate reading for one drive at best. I want to make sure as soon as ANY one drive in the array gets a little warm, the fans (3 front + 3 on the internal fan wall) all ramp up.
  8. I'm trying to control my case fan speeds based on the temps of my drives (for an Asus X570-Plus). I only see one community plugin relating to fan speed (Dynamix Auto Fan Control), however after trying it the PWM dropdown just displays 'none' and the 'detect' buttons do nothing. And I'm not even sure if this plugin can control speed based on drive temps (or if the plugin is even still supported). I posted on the massive 'Dynamix' thread over on the plugins forum, but I'm curious if there is any alternative way to control the fans. From bios I can set profiles, but they're all based on the MB temp sensor. It seems like a pretty common feature request for a NAS centric OS, I'm surprised unraid doesn't have any built in way to do this... So how do you guys control your drive fans?
  9. Having trouble with AutoFan 1.5 (UnRaid 6.8.2) the only option for PWM controller is 'none', and the 'detect' buttons do nothing. My Asus X570-Plus has 6 pwm fan ports, and I am only using two (the CPU for the cpu fan and CPU-OPT which is connected to a fan hub powering the front 6 drive bay fans). Everything looks fine in bios. I really want to control the speed of this fan hub based on the temp of the drives if that's possible... Any ideas?
  10. Ahh cool yes there was a CSM section, so I enabled that, and set all the (4 or so) options to 'legacy/oprom' instead of UEFI. My memtest flash drive boots now! I'll bet if I had enabled this earlier, my first unraid flash drive would have booted (instead I had to make a second one and enable the UEFI tick box under the "Customize" section).
  11. Ermm from the wiki... Guess I need to download from memtests website and make a second bootable flash? *well dang just made a bootable flash using the utility found on memtest.org (http://www.memtest.org/download/5.01/memtest86+-5.01.usb.installer.zip) but it won't boot (just goes straight to bios). Similar to the problem when first setting up UnRaid (it went straight to bios unless I checked the "Allow UEFI Boot" when running the flash tool). Is there somewhere in my bios where I can enable these 'non UEFI boot' devices? I enabled/disabled "Legacy USB Support", enabled/disabled "Fast Boot", but I don't see any other options relating to booting/UEFI...
  12. Every time I select memtest from the boot options, I get one line of text (too fast to read it) then my machine reboots. Google came up with this... https://www.passmark.com/forum/memtest86/40884-memtest-reboots-before-test-begins ...think this is a 'multi processor' issue? My system... Asus TUF Gaming X570-Plus AMD Ryzen 5 1600 16g Corsair Vengence DDR4 RAM Anyone encountered this before?
  13. Does anyone have experience with the new xfs scrub command? Or some other way to preemptively check the health of a file/disk? That seems to be one of the biggest differences between the two file systems. Or perhaps there is some other xfs or btrfs feature I am overlooking? But as I do more research on btrfs, it does seem like most of the bells and whistles it provides are useless for a simple 'write once read many media archive file server'...
  14. So I've spent a lot of time researching the differences between XFS/BTRFS. All of the 'issues'/instability with BTRFS seem to be from years ago, mostly relating to RAID (which isn't a factor for us, right?). There have been a handful of threads here on the forums, but I would expect more discussion when it comes to such an important (irreversible) decision.. The big selling point for me is data validation. Being able to periodically run 'btrfs scrub' just to verify the health of the disks (and system/memory overall) is a huge selling point. The peace of mind you get from that can't be under valued. I was hoping XFS had something similar, and there does seem to be a new 'xfs scrub' command, but does that actually work like BTRFS? Are there even checksums to verify? Or is there some BETTER way to detect if a drive is silently failing/corrupting data with XFS? Bottom line, if you're going to use UnRaid for a large file/media server (seems to be the most common use case), the only two major concerns I have are... 1.) How much wasted space does BTRFS generate (meta data etc...), and 2.) How much slower is BTRFS when reading/writing files. In the context of a file/media server, I have a feeling the answer to both of those questions is : an insignificant amount. Assuming that is all true, can anyone convince me to use XFS instead? Thanks *and just out of curiosity, what is the logic behind forcing us to use BTRFS for the cache drive?
  15. Thanks for the suggestions, but doesn't look like a tower is in my future. I pulled the trigger on a Rosewill RSV-L4500 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0091IZ1ZG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 15 bays, at that price... I think this one will work out best for me.
  16. Very interested in a tower with 12 bays (no need for hot swap), but everything in this thread has been discontinued :( Are there really no good towers for 8+ bay unraid setups?
