Hey guys,
currently I have the following issue / setup:
I have a Chenbro RM41416 case with 5x16TB, 1x 10TB, and 2 SSDs in it. As I started with my build (and still) the WifeAcceptanceFactor is a huge thing... So I decided to exchange the standard redundant PSU (which was loud as hell) with a customer PSU, which does absolutly fine.
I also exchanged the clip-in coolers (4x 80mm) right behind the backplane with 3x Noctua 120mm fans to keep the case silent and kind a cool.
To be honest, this didn't really worked out well. In my opinion the fans are too far away from the actual HDDs and have not enough pressure to prevent the disks from heating up.
The chassis itself is really heavy and I'm not really happy with the current state. So my next idea would be to switch back to a pretty large customer case - the Fractal Design 7 XL case.
This would offer me to place fans right in front of the disks and place even more large fans to pull out the air on the back, top , and bottom if needed. (it has some more benefits like getting rid of old backplates and this legacy-proprietary Chenbro stuff, or not needing so many custom adaptions since im using mostly consumer hardware etc)
My question now is: How problematic will it be to just replace the case - but with that, the backplate and the connection to the mainboard.
Now: The SAS connector from my Supermirco X11SSH-CTF is going directly to the SAS backplate of the Chenbro and there the Disks are connected via SATA to that backplate.
When switching to the Fractal, I would assume that I will connect some of the disks directly to the SATA ports of the mainboard and some of them have to go thru the SAS port again as well.
First: Is this enough to replace the backplate ?
Second: At this point the backplate handles the power management of the disks via 1 molex connector to each row (4HDDs), is it also enough to get one of these:
Is there propably any better way to handle this connection stuff ?
Third: Does Unraid have some pitfalls here?
(Any other doubts if this will help a little in cooling and organizing this build ? )
