I had a similar CPU spike, but no temperature issues here doing a similar thing. I had a hardware failure so decided to rebuild the array from scratch, as after 5 years of running I had a few issues with duplicated files over multiple drives, so it was an all drive out, restart and copy some 40TB back over drive by drive. The array is currently 4 12TB drives, and I am in the process of zeroing 2 8TB drives and the 5th 12TB drive finished it's 2 pre-clear cycles so I added it to the array. 12 hours later it's still formatting, and CPU was about 50%, so I stopped the zeroing of the 8TB drives and it formatted and added to the array in minutes. CPU dropped to just a few % It appears as though zeroing and formatting can't be done at the same time

I was having the same issue, and this was the only thing that worked for me. It's been weeks of no external access, but fine locally, but looking at the file it seems fine.

Current PC's in the rack: Unraid: Intel i7 3770k Gigabyte GA-H77-DS3H motherboard 32GB Ram 1* 8TB WD Red Parity drive 1* 8TB Seagate SMR archive drive 2* 4TB WD Red 3* 6TB WD Red (Yes these are the new SMR versions) 1* 1TB Samsung SSD as cache I plan on upgrading the PC to a Ryzen 5 3600 or similar, along with 32GB of RAM (As 2 16GB Sticks so I can upgrade to 64GB later), and something like an MSI X470 or B450-A Pro motherboard Dell R610: Dual Quad Core Xeon 5500's, 64GB of RAM GT710 video card (For hardware transcoding only) This is my Plex/Airvideo server, along with the home automation system running Home Assistant. Once the main Unraid PC is upgraded, I'll probably move Plex over to it as well.
