    Does anyone have any ideas?

  2. Hi,

I have decided to wait until the S1200 CPU + Motherboards drop in price a bit, before upgrading *facepalm*

What cheap board should I buy to fill the gap as my current board doesn't have enough PCI slots?

    CPU: Intel Xeon E3 1230 v3

    MOBO: Supermicro X10SLH-F/X10SLM+-F, Version 1.01

    RAM: 32GB Kingston 8GB ECC KVR16E11/8

Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you

  3. Looking at Amazon in the U.S., the board you mentioned (Gigabyte W480m Vision) is the least expensive W480 board they have right now.

You do need a W480 chipset to support the Xeon W-12xx CPUs; otherwise you could get by with a less-expensive Z490 chipset based board.

Frankly, there are very few GPUs right now that really take advantage of PCIe 4.0 bandwidth.  Almost all were designed with PCIe 3.0 in mind.  Also, PCIe involves the CPU as well PCIe is the interconnection between the CPU and the PCIe/M.2 slots on the board.  The W-12xx CPUs also supports PCIe 3.0 but not 4.0.

It's an entire platform deal and you'd have to wait for 11th generation CPUs and chipsets for PCIe 4.0

Your best "interim" now may be to just go with what you have specified and upgrade down the road when really need all the bandwidth PCIe 4.0 offers to GPUs and other peripherals.

Any MB and CPU you buy now will have to be replaced to get you to PCIe 4.0.

You might find this article interesting as there is a claim by some manufacturers that current Z490 (and supposedly W480?) motherboards have some built in PCIe 4.0 support; however, it will require an 11th generation CPU to take advantage of that even if it is true.

Thank you for your help [emoji4]

I will have a read and make my purchases today!

What ECC RAM wound you recommend that I buy for this board, that will hopefully work with the next upgrade?

  4. Hi,

Thank you for viewing my topic

I require some help to build a completely new server setup as I'm fed up of having multiple computers etc.

The new hybrid server will hopefully last for around five years, if I'm lucky!

The server must be able to handle the following tasks, my monitor and the parts that I'm bringing forward to new system:

    - The new server will have two completely separate Windows VMs for "two computers"

VM #1 - will be used for general internet tasks, coding (HTML/Android apps) and video/graphics editing.

VM #2 - will be used for general internet tasks, gaming and Plex, Netflix etc.

    -----

The parts that I am bring forward to my new system are:

MONITOR: LG 34UC99-W 34" Ultrawide Monitor
    CASE: Antec 1200

Graphics Card: Sapphire Radeon RX 5700 XT PULSE 8GB

HDD Cages: 2x Icy Dock MB155SP-B FatCage 5-in-3 SATA Internal Backplane Module
HDDs: 480GB SSD Docker & VM Drive & 40TB Of Data Storage

    UPS: APC BR900GI 540 Watts /900 VA

    Parts to buy:

    CPU: #ToBeConfirmed #NeedHelp
MOBO: #ToBeConfirmed #NeedHelp - Must have onboard sound for the VMs as my monitor has speakers built in :)

RAM: 16GB Kingston 8GB ECC KVR16E11/8 - If possible? I will be upgrading to 32GB when funds allow!

    PSU: #ToBeConfirmed #NeedHelp

    -----

Please, can you help me select my new parts for my new system?

    I really appreciate your help!

Thank you for taking your time to read my post and for any help that you can give me!

I can do a quick review of the MB15SB-B (the FatCage). It has much better airflow than the one in OP, more ventilation and bigger fan.

I "couldn't" handle Seagate Ironwolf drives. Temps where at +45C at idle. For these drives the Icy Dock Vortex (4in3) is a better choice, ~38C at idle and 45C parity checking.

However, when I run my 5 old 4TB WD Red drives, the temperature is stable at ~33C idle and 39-42C while parity checking. This is with fan at max, thinking about swapping it or running it at a lower speed because it's loud! Edit: at lower speed it's much more quiet.

Trays are pretty great according to me. Sturdy.

My ambient temperature is around 22C.

So, MB15SB-B is one worth purchasing?

    - Do you have a link?

    Thanks!
